Tailor-Made Holiday

Cruise to the Weddell Sea & Antarctic Peninsula

Icebergs, pack ice and emperor penguins

16 days

from £10,550pp (excluding flights)

This trip will appeal to those who want to experience the great remoteness. It combines the barren landscape of icebergs and pack ice with some of the more regularly visited sites of the South Shetland Islands and the west coast of the Antarctic Peninsula.

  • Helicopter trips to the Emperor Penguin colony at Snow Hill.
  • Wonderful wildlife opportunities including penguins, whales, seals and a plethora of seabirds
  • Adventurous voyage into the lesser visited Weddell Sea, where Shackleton and his men battled
  • Travel aboard a small ice strengthened ship with just 114 passengers, equipped with zodiacs & helicopters

The Weddell Sea is home to vast tabular icebergs, pack ice, grand vistas and some of Antarctica’s greatest penguin rookeries. Epic stories of endurance and survival, such as Shackleton’s and Nordenskjold’s, are synonymous with this region.

Spend time in the vibrant city of Buenos Aries before flying south and boarding your boat which will be home for the next 11 days and head off into the wilderness. After crossing the Drake Passage arrive in the Weddell Sea area and if conditions are right see the huge tabular icebergs with the chance to land on the Antarctic continent. Fly by helicopter to reach the Emperor Penguin rookery and watch these magnificent creatures in their remote habitat. Spend further days on zodiacs visiting Half Moon Island and see the Chinstrap and Gentoo penguins, Elephant and Weddell seals are also often seen here too.

Day 1

Fly London to Buenos Aires overnight

Day 2

Day at leisure in Buenos Aires

Known as 'The Paris of Latin America', Buenos Aires is quite simply one of the world's greatest cosmopolitan cities. World class museums and leading restaurants jostle for space with boutique shops and antique markets, and the colonial architecture and cobbled streets of San Telmo contrast with the modern lines and waterfront designs of up and coming Puerto Madero. It is a city with a colourful and fascinating history, which has given rise to a variety of neighbourhoods from the uber trendy Palermo Soho to the bohemian charm of La Boca, the birth place of tango.

You will be staying at Pulitzer, Bed & Breakfast

Day 3

Fly Buenos Aires to Ushuaia

Situated on the southern shore of Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia is the most southerly town in the world. Founded in 1884, the town was a penal colony until 1947. The location is fantastic, with views over the Beagle Channel and across to the Chilean Island of Navarino. Ushuaia can be either the jump off point for Antarctic cruises or the base from which to explore Tierra Del Fuego National Park and The Beagle Channel.

You will be staying at Hotel Albatros, Bed & Breakfast

Day 4

Ushuaia embarkation
Have the morning at leisure to explore, before transferring to the ship. Set sail in the early evening, charting a course through the Beagle Channel.

You will be staying at Ortelius, Full board

Day 5

Two Days at Sea
Traverse the Drake Passage, drawing closer to Antarctica. Eventually, cross the Antarctic Convergence, into the Antarctic Ocean, and notice a distinct drop in temperature. Along the way, look out for various species of albatross and petrel, as well as southern fulmars. Near the South Shetland Islands, begin to spot the first of the many icebergs.

You will be staying at Ortelius, Full board

Day 6

At Sea

You will be staying at Ortelius, Full board

Day 7

Weddell Sea
Sail into the Weddell Sea and, if the Antarctic Sound is accessible, draw close to the Antarctic Continent. Look out for the vast tabular icebergs that dominate the continent's eastern shore. There may also be the chance to make landfall at Brown Bluff.

You will be staying at Ortelius, Full board

Day 8

Two Days at Snow Hill Emperor Penguin Colony
Set out by helicopter to visit the emperor penguin colony. The use of helicopters has great advantages, but the itinerary is dependent on the ice and weather. If conditions are favourable, spend the next two days in the emperor penguin rookery.

The helicopter operation will take a full day, with the aircraft able to carry six passengers at a time. The flight will take approximately 15 minutes and the landing point will be carefully chosen to avoid impacting upon the penguins. Upon arrival, continue the expedition on foot. After a walk of around 45 minutes, rendezvous with the magnificent emperor penguins.

Due to the remote and wild nature of the trip, there can be no guarantees. Conditions may change rapidly, impacting upon the helicopter operation. Safety is the greatest concern and no compromises can be made.

You will be staying at Ortelius, Full board

Day 9

Emperor Penguin Colony

Day 10

Weddell Sea
If conditions were previously favourable, spend two days visiting Devil Island, Vega Island or Hope Bay. However, if the emperor penguin colony was unreachable on previous days, there will again be ship-to-shore helicopter flights to Snow Hill Island.

You will be staying at Ortelius, Full board

Day 11

Deception Island
In the morning, visit Half Moon Island and look for chinstrap and gentoo penguins, as well as various other birds, southern elephant seals and Weddell seals. Early in the afternoon, set sail to Deception Island and land, for the final time, at Pendulum Cove.

You will be staying at Ortelius, Full board

Day 12

Two Days at Sea
Head north and again spend time spotting the array of seabirds on show whilst crossing the Drake Passage.

You will be staying at Ortelius, Full board

Day 13

Day 14

Ushuaia disembarkation

Sue Grimwood, Travel Expert

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
