Northern cities and Emerald Bays

This ultimate Vietnamese journey begins in Hanoi with an eclectic two days visiting galleries showcasing Vietnamese art, local markets and restaurants while incorporating the classic and essential  sites such as the Temple of Literature, Hanoi’s old Quarter and the One Pillar Pagoda. There will be insightful stops for coffee and street food, Tai Chi by the lake and finishing the day with some local drinks, all the while staying in the colonial comfort of the Metrople Hotel. Moving out of the city, travel by seaplane to Halong, landing on this fabled bay before joining a small luxury junk for two days exploring the inlets and rocky outcrops found in its emerald waters.

Hue, Hoi An and beach

Return to Hanoi, again by seaplane before travelling in business class to the imperial city of Hue. Private boat to the Thien Mu Pagoda, picnic lunch on the banks of the Perfume River, wander through the peaceful citadel, damaged during the 1968 Tet Offensive - all highlights of Hue. Hoi An is reached over the dramatic Hai Van Pass and via the Museum of Cham Sculpture and to the fabulous Nam Hai Hotel, just 10 minutes outside this charming UNESCO town. With private walking tours, bespoke cooking lessons and a chance to have some clothes made, Hoi An is a highlight of Vietnam. Complete this part of the journey with a few days at the Six Senses Ninh Van Bay in a pool villa.

Ho Chi Minh or Saigon

Finishing off with the vibrant city of Ho Chi Minh, a heady mix of new and old with skyscrapers and pagodas rubbing shoulders, street vendors and stylish new restaurants serving their take on steaming bowls of noodles and shop at Binh Tay Market after a morning coffee in China Town.

This trip takes in the very best of Vietnam in true style, adding in the hidden gems of a country bursting with colour, atmosphere and history, both old and new.

Day 3

Vietnamese History in Colours
Today begins at a charming arts café where an introduction to modern Vietnamese history is given before moving onto visit the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts, which is housed in an impressive former French convent. Art from the colonial era fused with traditional Vietnamese materials gave birth to modern Vietnamese art. Showcased along side are works made during the two Indochina wars - sketches,propaganda posters and impressive government commissioned lacquer works help visitors understand the essential role of artists in resistance, revolution and reconstruction of a nation.

The day continues to Art Vietnam, one of Hanoi's longest running and most respected galleries, which highlights the rapid changes Vietnam underwent after the war followed by lunch at Manzi, a vibrant art space and café house in a stunnnung colonial era villa.

Day 4

Explore Hanoi like a local
This morning starts with a walk to Hoan Kiem Lake, it is a cultural thing in Vietnam to wake up early and start the morning with exercise, be a part of this and join with their morning routine. After visiting the Ngoc Son Temple, located in the middle of the Hoan Kiem Lake stop for coffee and some local street food. Explore Hanoi's Old Quarter on foot, with the French architecture in different Vietnamese buildings, St. Joseph Cathedral - a French gothic building constructed in 1886 before strolling onto Hoa Lo Prison, where Vietnamese as well as American and French prisoners of war where housed. The morning finishes at Huu Tiep Lake, better known as 'B-52 lake' where US B-5 bomber wreckage can be seen.

For lunch return to the Old Quarter to stop at Bun Cha restaurant to try Hanoi's speciality. Visit the Temple of literature, built in 1076. Vietnam's first university, which was established within this temple to educate Vietnam's royalty, mandarins and members of the elite. The last stop will be Hanoi railway, along the track and take in the spectacular views of the city. Finish off with evening drinks in the well-known Bia Hoi to taste the local draft beer.

Day 6

Bai Tu Long Bay
Have a morning coffee on deck with the view of the bay for company before heading off to a floating village after breakfast. Travel by local row-boat to Vung Vieng fishing village, home to floating schools, houses and fish farms. A BBQ lunch is served on a remote beach with the afternoon free for swimming or kayaking through the caves. Dinner is served on board.

Day 7

Travel from Halong Bay to Hanoi (Air Transfer Journey)

Fly Hanoi to Hue


Between 1802 and 1945, Hue was the imperial capital of the Nguyen Dynasty's Vietnam. Picturesquely nestled at the mouth of the Perfume River, Hue today is a relatively tranquil city albeit still popular with tourists attracted by its World Heritage Site status. Although it is a city that is famed for its past, it is unequivocally forward-looking.

Day 8

Full Day Tour
Today begins with a gentle boat trip on the Perfume River to visit the characteristic Thien Mu Pagoda before continuing onto the Forbidden Purple City, constructed under the Emperor Gia Long's, in the early 19th century. The Forbidden City is located in the Citadel, which was badly damaged during the Tet offensive of 1968. Established as the capital of unified Vietnam in 1802, Hue was not only the political but the cultural and religious center under the Nguyen dynasty until 1945. Hue was declared a UNESCO World Heritage in 1993.

After a local lunch visit the tombs of the emperors Tu Duc and Khai Dinh. Tu Duc was Vietnam's fourth emperor and lived from 1829 until 1883 and during his reign Vietnam lost its independence to France, it is also rumored he had 104 concubines. Khai Dinh was Vietnam's Emperor from 1916 to 1925 and his tomb represents a fusion of traditional Vietnamese style and modern influence, as it is almost entirely made of concrete and includes many European architectural details.

Day 9

Hue to Hoi An via Da Nang
This morning depart for Hoi An driving via the breathtaking Hai Van Pass. The pass, which once formed the boundary between the kingdoms of Dai Viet and Champa, also forms a boundary between the climates of northern and southern Vietnam. The Hai Van Pass is the highest and longest pass in Vietnam, with the North-South National Highway zigzagging through it for almost 20 km. Stop near Lang Co beach before reaching the Museum of Cham Sculpture, the villages around the Marble Mountain and finally to Hoi An.

Travel by car to Hoi An, a journey time of three hours.


Hoi An is a picturesque and friendly old port town. Once a major port and trading centre, it is now altogether more laid-back. Despite a recent surge in popularity with tourists, its beautifully preserved old quarter - dating back to the 15th century - ensures the town maintains its calm and distinctive old atmosphere.

Cooking class with Ms Vy
This day of food starts at Vy's Market Restaurant in Hoi An with a visit by boat to the colourful local central market then back to the restaurant. Vy's Market Restaurant is an interactive experience with food counters serving dumplings, pickles, chefs making local rice paper, hand rolling noodles, including the local dish Cao La and Hoi An chili sauce and salads.

The cooking lesson that follows lasts around three hours - choosing ingredients, learning about Vietnamese food history and culture before starting to prepare local dishes. A cook book and traditional cooking utensils will be yours to take home, along with a satisfied appetite.

Day 12

Walking tour
A morning spent exploring this charming town made up of hundreds of historic houses, congregation halls and pagodas. Its buildings and streets reflect the foreign influences, defining it as a unique heritage and multi-cultural site. There is plenty to see, such as the Japanese Covered Bridges, the Pottery Museum, the 200 years old Tan Ky House, Chua Ong Pagoda and the vibrant local market. Time is also made to visit one of the best tailors in Hoi An -Thu Thuy Tailor shop.

Thu Thuy tailor shop is found since 1989, and they stock thousands of high qualified fabrics from Italy, France, England, America, Vietnam and will store measurements of clothing over 3 years. Mrs. A quick and easy way to get something made is simply to bring a favorite item to be copied. The afternoon and evening are left free to further explore or relax back at the hotel.

Fly Nha Trang to Ho Chi Minh


Still known to locals and much of the rest of the world as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh is an exhilarating city of culture, commerce and bikes. Vietnam's largest city, it is a sprawling and chaotic metropolis that pulsates with innovation and energy.

Day 18

City Tour
Exploring Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) offers an experience of the country's most dynamic city - a vital economic hub, bustling with life, with many modern pockets without losing its Vietnamese traits. Modern skyscrapers sit amidst Chinese style pagodas and food stalls - all creating a dynamic yet traditional feel. Visit China Town and Binh Tay Market, stopping at Thien Hau, a 150 year old Chinese Temple, followed by the remarkable sites of the War Remnants Museum, which primarily exhibit the American phase of the Vietnam War. After lunch visit the Reunification Palace, followed by the Notre Dame Cathedral, the historic Central Post Office.


Sunset Cruise on Saigon River
Finish the day looking over the city from a private speedboat. As the sun sets the city's lights appear, lighting up the Thu Thiem Bridge, with all its parked bikes and the traditional waterfront homes mixing with modern villas belonging to the new middle classes. Return to the hotel at around 7:30pm or alternatively stay for dinner at The Deck - one of Saigon's best spots for dinner and cocktails. The boat will wait and provide the return journey to the hotel.
