Zanzibar Holidays

Zanzibar is an archipelago made up of the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and several other islets. Located in the Indian Ocean, about 25 miles from the Tanzanian coast, and lying just South of the Equator, it has a great year round climate.

why we like Zanzibar

  • Warm Indian Ocean water and sandy beaches
  • Traditional Swahili atmosphere and a wealth of fascinating buildings
  • Great water sports – diving, snorkelling and game fishing
  • Delicious seafood and interesting Stone Town markets

What to expect on your Zanzibar holiday

Zanzibar Island, known locally as Unguja, is 60 miles long and 20 miles wide, is characterised by beautiful sandy beaches with fringing coral reefs, making it a perfect romantic honeymoon destination. The magic of historic Stone Town which is said to be the only functioning ancient town in East Africa, is a true African historical gem.

Once the trading centre for East Africa, Zanzibar’s history as a hub for the Spice Route is visible in its architecture, and its rich Swahili heritage adds an exotic charm. The sensual beauty of the island makes it perfect for relaxation, inspiration and revival of the spirit.

A trip to Zanzibar can also be combined with a migration safari in Kenya or Tanzania or Gorilla safari in Uganda or Rwanda at the beginning of your holiday. With several international airlines that fly in and out of Zanzibar, access is relatively easy.

The best time to visit is during the dry months of June to October. November and December are great too, but have short rains, which are light and so should not hinder your beach experience.

Linked to the rainfall, this stunning migration of thousands of wildebeest – accompanied by zebra, gazelle, eland and impala – takes place  throughout the year, and follows a fairly predictable pattern, as the wildebeest are constantly seeking fresh grazing and water. Having said that, the wildebeest migration happens all year – the migration can be found during any given month; you just need to know where to look! The question should really be about the 'best places' to see them during a given time of the year – and when visiting them is most enjoyable.

Cotton layers such as t-shirts, a light fleece, shorts and a pair of long trousers are the key items. The temperature can vary quite a bit from the early morning game drive to the heat of the day. Sun screen, a hat and a swimming costume are the other necessities. It is best to avoid bright colours for a safari. Footwear should include a pair of sandals or flip flops and some walking shoes (trainers would be fine).

Almost all safari lodges in Tanzania have either a generator or solar power. This will provide electricity to the camp, but you may not have plug points in your room. There will be somewhere that you can charge your camera or phone but this maybe in the main area or the managers office.
