Showcasing wonders of nature – both zoological and geographical, this journey combines some of the best of Botswana and Zambia.
- Hear the thunder and feel the spray of the vast Victoria Falls
- Cruise the swirling waters of the mighty Zambezi
- Drive amongst the enormous elephant herds of the Chobe National Park
Begin on the banks of the Zambezi, at the activity-packed Waterberry Lodge. The smooth-flowing waters of the river offer many distractions. Cruise the Zambezi as the sparkling light of dawn illuminates the surrounding landscape or as glowing dusk turns to blackness. Visit the river’s descent into crashing oblivion – the iconic Victoria Falls. Walk below the tumbling white water, as the spray and sound cascade downwards.
Continue across the Zambezi and into the safari lands of northern Botswana. Here, the Chobe National Park spreads south from the Chobe River, encompassing large swathes of verdant savannah and woodland. Home to the Big Five, this huge park is dominated by its vast herds of ambling elephants. Nowhere else in Africa are these slow-moving pachyderms seen in such concentrations.
But Chobe is not just renowned for its megafauna. A diverse range of wildlife roams through this varied landscape, including wildebeests, impalas, kudus, waterbucks, giraffes and wild dogs. Drive and walk – led by expert guides – across plains, past ancient baobabs and through dense woodland, in search of plants and animals. After the sun sinks below the horizon, set out by 4x4 and seek out some of the park’s more elusive, nocturnal inhabitants. And for a more tranquil wildlife-spotting experience, take to the waters of the Chobe River – a fantastic place to spot thirsty fauna.
WHY WE LIKE IT
For those who love travelling, but dislike having to travel, this is a wonderfully relaxed itinerary. Free from domestic flights and requiring only a minimum of road transfers, it takes advantage of Chobe’s proximity to Victoria Falls.
Flexibility is also key. Not only do both lodges employ a pick-and-mix approach to activities, but there are numerous additional excursions available. For the intrepid, white-water rafting or canoeing can be arranged on the Zambezi, whilst those who prefer airborne adventures might consider a helicopter or microlight flight over Victoria Falls.
