Flying Safari from Bwindi to Lake Victoria

Explore the Valley of the Hunters

14 days

from $8,895pp (excluding flights)

95 % of people who come to Uganda won’t do this trip. Search for gorillas in the clouds, dancing Karamajong tribes and the elusive shoebill stork in style and comfort.

  • Fly to Kidepo Valley NP, home to Karamajong Warriors and Big Game
  • Trek the Nkuringo gorillas in remote western Bwindi
  • Search for "King Whale Head" (shoebill stork) on the lakes of Semliki
  • Reflect on the days adventures over a sumptous dinner at stylish lodges

A luxury safari for the adventurous, beginning with the Nkuringo region of Bwindi - only opened to tourism in 2004 when a handful of lucky steppes clients were the first tourists in the world to see the gorillas here – at the request of the Ugandan Wildlife Society. Follow in their footsteps, high above the clouds, in one of the most spectacular settings, where active volcanoes glow at night.

Continue flying over emerald mountains to Semliki, Uganda’s oldest reserve where shoe bill storks haunt nearby lakes and there is the chance to search for chimpanzees, before flying North of the Nile to Kidepo Valley National Park home to the famous Karamajong warriors. So expansive you can see the earths curve, yet so remote this mountainous, wildlife-rich park is explored by only 5% of all visitors who come to Uganda. Finally wash the dust off your bootsand unwind on the shores of Lake Victoria at a stylish retreat.

A trip for those who don’t follow the crowd.

Day 1

Fly London to Nairobi overnight

Day 2

Fly Nairobi to Entebbe

Lazily spread out along the shore of Lake Victoria and straddling the equator, Entebbe exudes a more relaxed atmosphere and tropical charm than the capital. As a night or so here is usually included as part of a trip to Uganda, those who take time to explore can visit the botanical gardens, where many of the ancient trees are taller than most of Entebbe’s buildings. The birding in the park is also superb and there is the chance for pretty much guaranteed close encounters with the resident black-and-white colobus monkeys. It’s even rumoured that some of the early Tarzan films were shot here.

You will be staying at Boma Guest House, Bed & Breakfast

Day 3

Travel from Entebbe to Bwindi Impenetrable National Park (Air Transfer Journey)

Covered in thick tropical rainforest and often shrouded in mist, Bwindi provides a perfect habitat for mountain gorillas. Spread over a series of steep ridges and valleys it looks the part and having survived the last ice age is considered one of the most diverse forests in Africa. The birding here is big and colourful, the forest dark and inviting and the sense of adventure palpable.

Day 4

Day of Gorilla Trekking
Head out early to meet your rangers for a briefing, before stepping into the park to search for one of the gorilla families that inhabit Bwindi's forests. Track the gorillas across the steep hills they call home, through dense jungle, with the rangers clearing the way.

The mud, sweat (and sometimes tears) are worth it and coming face to face with the gorillas is like no other wildlife experience out there. Bring plenty of memory cards, lots of water and strong legs. Leave any bags with the porters, and spend an hour close to the group, before trekking back, out of the trees.

Afterwards, spend the rest of the day at leisure or perhaps arrange a visit to one of the nearby villages.

Day 5

Second Day of Gorilla Trekking
Today there is another opportunity to track the gorillas. After another early start, you will receive your briefing again at the park headquarters and then head out with the team to hopefully find a different group. It is important to remember here that every gorilla group is different and every trek is different. Whereas your first trek may have been a relaxed affair, with some of the younger gorillas playing, this second trek may be a much more thrilling experience, with the silverback displaing his strength. The forest will be different, the atmosphere of the group is different and hopefully you will allow the overall experience to sink in that much more after your initial hour with them already on the previous trek.

As before, afternoon activities are kept flexible depending on when you return from the forest.

Day 6

Travel from Bwindi Impenetrable National Park to Semliki (Air Transfer Journey)

The Semliki Wildlife Reserve is a massive area of wilderness situated between the Ruwenzori Mountains and Lake Albert deep inside Uganda's Western Rift Valley. The reserve is a prime conservation area, much of it entirely untouched. As such, it is a haven for a huge array of wildlife - including lion, buffalo, leopard and elephant, both savannah and forest species, along with the national antelope of Uganda and the Uganda kob.

Choice of Afternoon Activities
A chance this afternoon to relax, head out on game drives, a birding walk or the chance for some thrilling night activities.

You will be staying at Semliki Safari Lodge, Full board

Day 7

Chimp Trekking in Kibale
Head into the forest in the early morning to track chimpanzees. Depending on where the chimpanzees nested the night before, it may take anything from ten minutes to over an hour to reach the nesting site. The chimpanzees are not as habituated as the gorillas and cover much much greater distances thus making finding them harder with no guarantee that they will be found. Expect to watch silhouettes of chimpanzees in the trees as troops forage and explore their territory and listen to the pant hoots and calls between troops of up to 60 individuals.

Day 8

Travel from Semliki to Entebbe (Air Transfer Journey)

Travel from Entebbe to Kidepo Valley National Park (Air Transfer Journey)

Located on the South Sudanese border in the farthest corner of wild Karamoja, Kidepo is Uganda's remotest and most magnificent wilderness. Elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, eland, hartebeest, lion, hyena and cheetah roam rolling grasslands that extend in all directions towards distant mountain ranges. A safari here offers spectacular scenery, amazing wildlife and a chance to visit the local Karamajong tribe.

Game Activities
Take a walking safari or drive in an open Landcruiser along a sandy dry river bed fringed with palm trees, climb to the top of a rocky outcrop and take in the views. Guides move slowly along isolated tracks to allow you to fully appreciate all around you, looking for tracks and signs of the animals movements so you can stop at any point to investigate further. Perhaps track lion or cheetah, and be surrounded by zebra, waterbuck, Jackson's hartebeest, warthog, Patas monkeys and big herds of buffalo.

You will be staying at Apoka Lodge, Full board

Day 9

Game Activities
Wildlife in Kidepo is abundant. Lion, leopard, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, zebra (this is Uganda's only park where giraffe and zebra are found together), possibly Africa's largest herds of buffalo, hartebeest, waterbuck, bushbuck, warthog - the list is endless. Better still, much of it can be seen from the privacy of your veranda or your outdoor bathtub, but the best way to see the wildlife is up close: on foot, or in one of an open-top Landcruiser.

Day 10

Kidepo Valley Tour
Another full day to explore this fascinating park.

You will be staying at Apoka Lodge, Full board

Morning Game Drive
Take another game drive in the morning, before returning to the lodge late morning and enjoy brunch.

Drive from Kidepo Valley National Park to Lake Victoria (Road Journey)

Activities at Pineapple Bay
On arrival, take off your shoes, wrap yourself up in a nice soft kikoy and just relax. Here, you can lounge on a Lamu bed, looking out to the sparkling waters of Lake Victoria or charter a fishing-boat and head off with rod and tackle to fish for the legendary Nile Perch. You could arm yourself with binoculars and roam for kilometres over this unspoiled island paradise in search of hundreds of birds who make this their home.

After all this, join the chef in the organic gardens and choose your own pineapple, own avocado and vegetables to have with lunch.

If feeling a little more energetic, you can climb to a breezy hilltop and enjoy an ice-cold sundowner with a 360 degree view as this 500 acre island has it all: rocky cliffs, sandy beaches, tropical forests, sweeping grasslands and offers the perfect place to unwind after your adventure.
