Ladies in bazaar, southern Tajikistan

Tajikistan

Nestled on Afghanistan’s northern border, Tajikistan is a beautiful land of sweeping mountain views and warm, generous people.

Lying along Afghanistan’s northern border, most of Tajikistan’s population belong to the Persian-speaking Tajik ethnic group, who share language, culture and history with both Afghanistan and Iran.

Starkly beautiful, remote and beguiling, mountains cover more than 90% of the country and include such famous names as Peak Lenin and Peak Communism both towering at over 7,000 metres.

What to expect on your Tajikistan holiday with Steppes

There are few places in the world quite as remote as the mountains of Tajikistan and for the moment it must remain the preserve of the individual who recognises that despite all the best-laid plans and our own extensive knowledge, an itinerary in Tajikistan should be considered an aim rather than as carved in stone. This is one of the many reasons that we love Tajikistan and because it is wild and one of the last forgotten corners of the globe.

Paul Craven

Paul is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Central Asia and the Silk Route.

Being from a family with Army connections I can from an early age remember travelling. From camping in Europe and then later being sent to boarding school when we lived in Germany at the age of eight, complete with shorts, long socks, a cap and my suitcase. In appearance not too dissimilar to the children evacuated to the countryside during the blitz.
