Suriname Holidays

Suriname packs an enormous punch for such a small country. Criss-crossed with rivers and swathed in Amazonia's oldest roots, it is a pioneering holiday destination ideal for nature enthusiasts.

Why we like Suriname

Suriname is a tiny country and a trip to Suriname combines well with a visit to its two neighbours, French Guiana and Guyana. The Dutch influence, which stems from the early 19th century, can be clearly seen and makes a change from the more common Spanish architecture in Latin America.

What to expect on your Suriname holiday

Besides being the smallest independent country in South America, Suriname remains the colonial home of the Dutch and has a diverse mix of European, African and Amerindian cultures. These cultures have fused together creating an eclectic blend of food, music and culture. Its vivacious capital, Paramaribo, is a bustling port with lively markets and an jumble of 18th and 19th century buildings, yet beyond the Atlantic coast Suriname's main attraction lies in a sparsely populated interior blanketed by a dense and untamed rainforest which covers some 80% of the country.

Some ideas for a Suriname holiday

  • The 17th century capital of Paramaribo is graced with attractive British, Dutch, French and Spanish colonial architecture.
  • The rainforest's resident fauna and flora include wild cats, tarantulas, howler monkeys, rare flowers and giant termite nests.
  • Set off in dugout canoes to experience the traditions and daily life of the Maroon tribe and old colonial plantations.
