South East Asia

From the temples of Angkor in Cambodia to the orangutans of the Borneo’s lowland rainforest, a holiday in South East Asia opens the gate into a region of great historical, biological and anthropological interest, a region of undiscovered ruins and unnamed species which 21st century historians and naturalists are only now starting to explore. Families, first time visitors and seasoned travellers who love the region as much as we do will all gain something from a visit.

Because we've explored these incredible destinations ourselves, we can recommend the sites, flavours, and activities that will allow you to experience the essence of a place at a pace that suits you. And with our highly qualified guides, you'll be looked after every step of the way. As your itinerary is completely tailor-made, the journey ideas illustrate just some of the various ways your holiday could develop. Please call one of our Asia team to discuss your travel ideas and create a journey individual to you.

A few ideas

  • Watch as the rising sun silhouettes the ribbed stone pine cones of Angkor Wat, leaf pointed branches unfurl in bas relief and petrified war elephants clomp off to war. At its apex, Angkor stretched further than modern-day Paris in area and the stone lugged here amounts to a colossal mountain of building materials. The volume of stone exceeds that of all Ancient Egypt’s monuments combined.

  • Pay a visit to a Toraja village. Walk down a row of saddle-shape-roofed, finely strutted tongkonans (homes) and get to know the Toraja people, the complex gradations of their system of nobility and the wild, flame feather headdresses, mesmerising dances and sacrificial buffalo slaughter of a nobleman’s deathfeast, the celebration of his ascension into Puya, the land of souls.

  • Observe the soft-furred, auburn Bornean orangutan toddle through the pinnate ferns, scattered bark and buttress roots of the Bornean forest floor. In the absence of predators, Bornean orangutans have less need to brachiate and roam the jungle undergrowth freely.

  • Stroll along the gentle, warm sands of a Thai beach and lie back, looking out onto the green stubbled rock stacks of the Andaman Sea.
