Tailor-Made Holiday

Kwazulu-Natal Wildlife & Battlefields

Big Five and bloody battles

12 days

from $3,350pp (excluding flights)

This diverse holiday offers a perfect mixture of wildlife, history and relaxation in KwaZulu-Natal, a province of South Africa spoilt with a great climate and some beautiful scenery.

  • Exceptional wildlife at Big 5 Phinda Private Game Reserve
  • The Battlefields of Isandlwana, Fugitives Drift, Rorke’s Drift and Blood River
  • Relax on Durban’s glorious Indian Ocean beaches

Start off with a safari in Kwa-Zulu Natal’s best game reserve - Phinda, well known for its variety of habitats, abundance of wildlife and range of safari activities from game drives and walking safaris to rhino tracking, swimming with whale sharks on the coast close by and night turtle drives.

After early morning starts on safari, spend time relaxing in the coastal town of Umhlanga in Durban, soaking up ocean vistas from the terrace or walking along sandy beaches lapped by the warm Indian Ocean. Durban offers a year round sub-tropical climate, interesting attractions, great cuisine and a chance to recharge before heading to the Battlefields.

Visit the heritage sites of Isandlwana, Fugitives Drift, Rorke’s Drift and Blood River. The Zulu and Boer Wars of the late 19th century have come to symbolise the best and worst of human history. Tales of unbelievable bravery abound from these wars, from a time when warfare bore no resemblance to the high-tech combat of today. Listen as passionate accounts of bravery unfold against the backdrop of the African veld and Drakensburg Mountains.

Day 2

Travel from Johannesburg to KwaZulu-Natal (Air Transfer Journey)

From its subtropical palm fringed shores, lapped by the Indian Ocean to the mountainous Drakensberg range, KwaZulu-Natal offers a wealth of scenic splendour. Its green, rolling countryside is reminiscent of England’s shires and the Battlefields echo with history of clashes between the British, Zulus and Boers. Enjoying one of the best year round climates in the country, the province is easily combined with other areas, although with the Big Five, Battlefields and beaches all on its doorstep, its well worth a visit on its own.

Day 3

A typical day on Safari
Although it changes from lodge to lodge, there is common routine amongst all the safari camps in South Africa. Usually there are 2 game drives a day. The morning one starts at daybreak and the evening one starts in the afternoon and extends to a night drive, complete with flashlight by which you can see the nocturnal species. Most diurnal animals are avoided at night.

Activities at Phinda
Activities on Phinda include morning and afternoon game drives in open vehicles with ranger and tracker, nature walks, excellent birding, riverboat cruises and canoeing. Extra activities available at additional cost include scenic coastal flights, beach excursions with turtle viewing (November to January), horse riding, black rhino tracking and cultural visits.

Experience Durban through the eyes of a local. Visit the oldest standing house in the city, explore the markets at Warwick Triangle and sample local delicacy bunny chow. Setting off from the Berea, learn about Durban's origins and take in the impressive skyline.

Begin by discovering the vibrant diversity of the Victoria and early morning markets. Engage with citizens, explore the arcades that criss-cross the city and sample Durban's Indian culinary heritage. Continue with a walk around the historic centre - from City Hall to the inner city gardens. Finish with a scenic drive along Durban's harbour, Africa's busiest port.

The port of Durban on Kwa-Zulu Natal's east coast is a true melting pot of cultures with a fascinating history. Colonial and Indian influences are visible throughout the city where the local dish is still curry.

With a sub-tropical climate, Durban's sandy beaches are alive with activity with surfers riding the warm Indian Ocean waves and joggers enjoying the great promenade.

Now a peaceful isolated region, the Natal Battlefields were once awash with the blood of Zulus, Boers and British alike. For the best part of a century these three groups fought to assert their dominance over the vast plains of KwaZulu Natal. Now famed for its wildlife as much as its bloody history, the Battlefields region remains a diverse and fascinating area.
