12 days

from $7,899pp (excluding flights)

This suggested USA holiday visits a number of national parks including Yellowstone, Zion and Bryce Canyon as well as time on Lake Powell. Stay in comfortable private tented camps and a ranch to get a real taste of the wilderness of the USA.

  • Visit Yellowstone National Park with a private guide finding the hidden gems
  • Explore Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon, two areas with unique scenery
  • Paddle by kayak deep into the slot canyons of Lake Powell
  • Steppes has access to special permits to stay in private tented camps in remote locations

Yellowstone National Park

Begin this USA adventure in West Yellowstone, camping in style in a remote spot away from the busy areas within the park itself. There is no set agenda, the private guides can advise and suggest options to choose from each day. Go into Yellowstone National Park and visit the lesser known areas which are great for wildlife as well as the more famous geothermal sites. Travelling with a specialist guide who knows the park well avoid the busiest spots and more crowded times of the day and find the best places to watch the sunset. Not only visit Yellowstone National Park but also the nearby areas of Hebgen Lake, great for fishing.

Zion Mountain Ranch

From here fly south to Utah and stay in Zion Mountain Ranch. A beautiful setting surrounded by meadows, forests and mountains and just on the edge of Zion National Park. Time here is free to hike around the ranch, relax in the spa or visit enchanting Bryce Canyon or Zion with the famous slot canyons.

Lake Powell

Drive to the edge of Lake Powell, an area of incredible scenery and a playground for those that love water sports. Travel across the lake by speed boat to a secluded private camp, home for the next few days. Time will be spent swimming, water skiing and sightseeing by speed boat. For a more peaceful option travel by kayak or stand-up paddle board deep into the many slot canyons that surround the lake. Travel with a guide who can explain about the fascinating geology and find the best areas away from the crowds.

Why stay in a private tented camp

The private fully serviced camps offer the chance to stay in outstanding locations and in comfort. Accommodation in the popular national parks can be low quality and very crowded, so this offers a great alternative. Steppes Travel has access to special permits that allow camping in these areas, often in places no-one has camped before.

A historic frontier city, Bozeman began life as a stopping point on the Bozeman trail, which linked the Oregon Trail with the mining town of Virginia City. As a reminder of the city's 'wild west' past, large numbers of heritage buildings dot the peaceful streets.

Nowadays, the city's mining and trapping heyday has passed, but its role as an entry point into the ever-popular Yellowstone National Park has led to a thriving tourist industry. Outdoor activities abound in Bozeman, with skiing, hiking and wildlife trekking all available in the surrounding area.

Yellowstone National Park, established in 1872 by Ulysses S. Grant, was the first national park in the world and home to the majority of the world's geysers. The diversity found in these 3,500 square miles is amazing and ranges in both geology and wildlife. The park is made up of many lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. Amongst these is Yellowstone Lake; one of the largest high-altitude lakes in North America and Old Faithful the most famous geothermal feature in the world. It is also home to 1,700 species of trees and plants and hundreds of mammals, birds, fish and reptiles. During a visit to this park, it is possible to see grizzly bears, wolves, bison, elk and many other animals in their natural setting.

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
