Aged five and with my Curious George toy safely tucked under my arm, I set off with my family to travel around Europe in an orange VW minibus. Looking back on the adventures we had along the way, I now know that this was where my love for travel and exploring began.

In 1996, I left my home in South Africa on what was meant to be a couple of months to travel and work. I fell into a job at a small travel company specialising in Africa and then, as they say, the rest is history. It was here I was introduced to an Africa that I only ever saw on TV with David Attenborough and soon I fell deeply in love with this truly spectacular continent.

From the heights of the Simien Mountains in Ethiopia to freediving with dolphins in Mozambique, and everything in-between, Africa just keeps on surprising me. I will continue to travel to this great continent as long as I am able, although Curious George does stay at home.

Rwanda - Remember, Unite, Renew

As excited as I was about travelling to Rwanda to visit the mountain gorillas in Virunga, I also wanted to learn and understand more about the genocide that happened here in 1994. Having seen the haunting images on TV at the time, I really did not understand or comprehend the true extent of this human atrocity. Visiting the genocide memorial in Kigali was an experience that will remain with me for a lifetime. The stories that I read and the images I saw were not pleasant; however, the feeling of hope and forgiveness within those walls were remarkable and a lesson to us all.

Republic of Congo – A field of fireflies

Sitting in the heart of the rainforest in Odzala, Republic of Congo was one thing I never thought I would be fortunate enough to do. It is a million miles from nowhere and seemed impossible to get to, yet with a couple of flights from London and a short 10-hour drive through the Republic of Congo, I was here in Odzala watching nature’s very own light show created by fireflies. This was just one of my many experiences in Odzala over my week-long visit and every time I think about my experience here my highlight changes.

Mozambique – Mermaid in the Making

On a cold and rainy February morning, I was asked if I wanted to travel to Mozambique and learn to free dive. Without even thinking, “yes” was my reply – anything to get out of a damp day in the UK. Sitting back at my desk whilst the rain fell outside it starting dawning on me just what I had agreed to – fear, panic and excitement starting to set in all at once. Three weeks later, I was in the Indian Ocean using my skills I had learnt that week freediving with dolphins. It is amazing how life can change by just saying yes.

Braving the cold waters of the Atlantic and swimming with seals off the Skeleton Coast.

Making way for a silverback

You get told to not get any closer than seven metres whilst visiting the mountain gorillas, clearly, they don’t get told the same.
