Founded in 1524 on the shores of the mighty Lake Nicaragua – it is famed as one of the oldest European settlements in the western hemisphere – it is full of history and Spanish colonial charm.
Everything is within easy walking distance from the Museo Comunitario to the bell tower of the church of La Merced, from a small cigar factory to the informative and fun experience that is Bate Bate Chocolate.
The city also makes a great base for exploring the surrounding area, with volcanos such as Mombacho, the villages of Catarine and Pueblos Blancas and Las Isletas de Granada all within easy reach.
