Bagan, Myanmar

Bagan

Bagan, situated in central Burma (Myanmar), has many temples that rival those of Angkor in Cambodia and its surroundings offer simple sublime solitude and an enriching travel opportunity.

The 4,000 temples which lie scattered across the plain at Bagan are all that remains of the once important capital. Some are small, some are huge, and some are in ruins while others remain in use.

It is an extraordinary sight and needs a couple of days to fully appreciate the sheer size of it all. Wander around on foot or, for a more relaxing day, by horse and carriage.

Mount Popa, Myanmar (Burma)
Myanmar

Mount Popa

Nearby is the volcanic plug of Mount Popa which rises 200ft vertically out of the fertile plain. Climb the endless stairway to the summit and visit the temple dedicated to the mischievous Nat spirits which permeate the everyday life of the people. The reward is a fine view across the plain.

Bagan definitely offers an exploration opportunity beyond belief for those who wish to travel and discover the history and cultures which surrounds it.

Paul is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Central Asia and the Silk Route.

Being from a family with Army connections I can from an early age remember travelling. From camping in Europe and then later being sent to boarding school when we lived in Germany at the age of eight, complete with shorts, long socks, a cap and my suitcase. In appearance not too dissimilar to the children evacuated to the countryside during the blitz.
