Furcifer Oustaleti chameleon, Amber Mountain National Park, Madagascar

Amber Mountain National Park

Established by the French in 1958, this volcanic massif and its surrounding forests are now some of the most exciting parks to visit and a welcome green oasis in the drier parts of the north.

Named after the amber resin found in the trees here, the park is home to some extraordinary plant and animal life, in particular chameleons, with huge ferns and strangler figs adding drama to a park where beautiful walking trails wind their way past tropical waterfalls.
The park is a perfect example of montane rainforest and is home to beautiful bird’s nest ferns, tree ferns, orchids and liana vines giving it an exotic feel. Crested ibis, paradise flycatcher and forest rock thrush flash through the greenery as the trail passes numerous waterfalls and crater lakes, the focal points centred on three beautiful waterfalls – the most famous being the fern-ringed rock pool at the Cascade Sacree.

The Litchi Tree £££££

  • Madagascar
  • Safari and Wildlife Lodge

This colonial, boutique guesthouse is stylish and colourful. With only a handful of cottages, converted from the spacious stables at the back of the main house, the rooms are simply and beautifully furnished. Colourful cushions and rugs add warmth and character to the cosy double bedrooms, as do the wooden floors and carved decorations.

Nature Lodge £££££

  • Madagascar
  • Safari and Wildlife Lodge

These safari-tent style cottages not only look great from the outside (a mixture of sleek canvas, stone bathrooms and thatched roofs) but the dark polished wood inside, covered in colourful batik and traditional lamba fabrics softens the atmosphere. The location of the lodge itself is also a big draw with endless views of the valleys below, best enjoyed from the private terrace outside each tent.
