Only a century old, Tel Aviv is a young city in a country packed with ancient settlements. A relaxed, modern and surprisingly liberal city, Tel Aviv is the heart of contemporary Israel. Looking out over the azure blue waters of the Mediterranean, the city benefits from a relaxed beach vibe as well as a lively art and music scene. No visit to Tel Aviv would be complete without visiting the ancient city of Jaffa, which is utterly unmissable.
Find numerous remains of Roman and Crusader structures along the coast. Explore Caesarea Maritima in the company of a geoarchaeologist. The seaports you pass along the way include the Old City of Acre, which is a designated UNESCO walled city. The remains of the Crusader town lie almost intact, both above and below today’s street level, providing an exceptional picture of the layout and structures of the capital of the medieval Crusader kingdom of Jerusalem.
Tiberias, looking out over the Sea of Galilee, was constructed as a tribute to the Roman Emperor of the same name, built on top of a Jewish graveyard and dating back over 2000 years ago. Modern Tiberias is now one of Judaism’s four holy cities and attracts thousands of pilgrims annually. Visit the hot springs, just a few kilometres south. The thermal baths have been known for their healing powers for over 3000 years. Thought to be the site that Jesus cured the sick, Israeli pharmacies keep supplies of the mineral salts for patients. Why not give the earliest known thermal baths a whirl?
Tel Dan National Park borders Lebanon and is a surprisingly fertile park, home to an ancient royal city of the northern kingdom of Israel.
A highlight for most is the atmospheric city of Jerusalem. Explore the various Jewish, Muslim, Christian and Armenian Quarters, the Wailing Wall and the Biblical town of Bethlehem.
When at the Dome of the Rock meet with an imam who will explain the importance of this holy site to Muslims. What at the Western Wall, touch the ancient stones, and meet with a rabbi to learn the significance of this sacred place. The significance of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, according to tradition is that is is the tomb of Jesus. A late afternoon ascent to the top of Mount of Olives is a must to take in the panoramic views of the domes spires and rooftops of the Old City.
Visit the Manger Square in Bethlehem to gain a sense of arrival. This is the hub of activity. The square is flanked by the Church of St Catherine and the Church of Nativity. At the Church of the Nativity, descend into the cave revered by many as the birthplace of Jesus. For an alternative view of Bethlehem, walk with your guide through a nearby Palestinian refugee camp, and learn how murals and graffiti have been used to depict the refugees’ struggles.
