Marine life of the Azores
Located on the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, 1500 km off the coast of Portugal, the Azores archipelago consists of nine main islands, four of which are UNESCO Biosphere Reserves. In the waters surrounding the islands, volcanic seamounts and coral gardens carpet the ocean floor, creating a magnet for marine life, including resident sperm whales and dolphins, as well as migrating rays and blue whales between April and August. Recognised as a Hope Spot and Marine Protected Area by the Blue Azores Programme, 30% of the Azores Sea is protected, with 15% designated as a no-take marine reserve zone, allowing for outstanding diving and whale watching experiences year-round.
