The Kingdom of Mustang
The Kingdom of Mustang is perched on the border with Tibet and for many years was closed to foreign visitors. However, the Nepalese Government re-opened the region in 1992 – for strictly limited numbers of organised treks. Mustang is a barren landscape with only a few small green fields dotting a lunar landscape but boasts a remarkable spiritual heritage. The region is one of the last bastions of undisturbed living Tibetan culture.
This trip combines trekking through Mustang’s fascinating villages, alongside Buddhist shrines and temples and in the shadows of the Himalayas most iconic mountains, before arriving at the fabled walled city of Lo Manthang for 3 days of dancing at the Tije Festival.
Tea House Accommodation
Whilst trekking, the accommodation in the villages are typical tea houses. Teahouses are essentially small hotels found in local villages that offer both a place to sleep as well as home-cooked meals. They are simple places to sleep, however, they are friendly and local with a simple homestay feeling.
Most of the tea houses have cold showers available and a few even have hot water for an extra cost! Bedrooms are normally shared, with two beds. Bring earplugs for a good night’s sleep as the walls are pretty thin! The tea house trek through Mustang focuses on the most interesting places such as houses of local residents. Food is cooked fresh to order and a warm meal served around a toasty stove. No matter the quality of the tea house the friendly spirit of the local Nepalese is always present and they will do their best to make you feel welcome and comfortable. Trekking in the Mustang regions with the more basic teahouses is an experience not to be missed and shows you the other side of Nepal that very few tourists get to see.
Either side of the Mustang trek, there are essential days for downtime and an opportunity for sightseeing in the capital city of Kathmandu and the lakeside setting of Pokhara.
The accommodation in both Kathmandu and Pokhara are Nepalese owned and have been chosen for their traditional style and green spaces.

In the Company of Sherpas
Nima Lama or one of his team will accompany you on the trek. His main function is to look after your welfare. He is an experienced trekker chosen not only for his knowledge of the Himalaya but perhaps more importantly, for his “people skills”. He is there to ensure you have a safe, informed and enjoyable trek.
A trekking team includes Sherpas and porters. They are responsible for the smooth running of the trek, guiding you during the day. The porters carry all equipment and they are supplied with additional equipment and clothing by our Nepalese trekking partners to ensure they are adequately protected on our treks.
This is Altitude Trekking
The terrain is rough and the altitude can be hard going but you will be in the safe hands of a Himalayan expert and his team of sherpas.
Simply the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the trekking experience. The walking pace during the day is relaxed and you are able to walk at your own pace. If you are a regular walker then this trek will present few challenges. For those who do not walk regularly, we suggest a programme of day walks or weekend walks leading up to departure. There are a number of stone steps and uneven surfaces during the trek.
Your journey to Upper Mustang travels at higher altitudes where you will feel the mild effects of the ‘thinner air’. The highest altitude you will sleep at is 3849 metres. There is a day when the trek pushes up a little to a maximum height of 4,050 metres.
Experience the Authentic Tije Festival
This is the most auspicious festival in the Upper Mustang region of Nepal. There are three full days of Tiji celebrations and generally happen around mid- May with dancing and traditional music. It can be included in your travel plans if it coincides.
Everest Scenic Flight Option
This one-hour journey starts and finishes from Kathmandu airport. Every client gets a window seat and has views of the Langtang, Rolwaling and Everest mountain ranges as the flight heads east. The usual route heads over Mera Peak with views of Makalu and then the plane flies close to Mount Everest and you will see into Tibet.
