The Grand Egyptian Museum and Restoration Labs in Cairo

The Museum of Egyptian Antiquities, known as the Egyptian Museum or Museum of Cairo is home to an extensive collection of ancient Egyptian antiquities, the sheer size of the display is jaw-dropping and well worth a visit. There are also thousands of artefacts still in storage, crying out for space to be displayed. The opening of the new Grand Egyptian Museum or Giza Museum will house these items, including the full Tutankhamun collection, displayed for the very first time. We can arrange a visit to the restoration labs for a behind-the-scenes look at how these ancient artefacts are revived and brought back to life, ready for display.

The Nile and Oberoi Zahra

A Nile cruise offers the perfect platform from which to access many of the country’s greatest archaeological treasures. There are many boats to choose from but the Oberoi Zahra and its sister, the Oberoi Philae are certainly two of the most luxurious on the river. The boats offer four, five, six or seven-night cruise options between Luxor and Aswan, visiting ancient temples and sites en route with plenty of time to relax by the pool while life on the Nile floats past.

Aswan and Abu Simbel

Spend some time in the picturesque city of Aswan, where the Nile ends and Lake Nasser begins. A few days exploring the Nubian villages and river islands of Aswan whilst staying at the Sofitel Old Legend Cataract, is the perfect way to end a holiday in Egypt. A further highlight of this area is to take a short flight to the southern ancient site of Abu Simbel, the famous temple of Ramses II.

When to travel

The most popular time to visit Egypt is during the winter months, from October to March.  Note that in the western desert during the winter months (Oct-March) the mosquitos and flies are at their worst. Low season is from June to August and this is due to the weather being rather unbearable with daytime temperatures in the south soaring to 40 degrees and higher.
