Dudhwa National Park in Northern India is a remote and utterly pristine eco-system, rich in wildlife and still off the mainstream’s radar. If you are looking for a serious, near-exclusive wildlife experience in India, then this is the place to come.
Billy Arjan Singh, Indian hunter turned conservationist and author, successfully hand-reared and reintroduced zoo-born tigers and leopards into the wilds of Dudhwa. Dudhwa also contains plenty of Indian rhinoceros and wild elephant and the park is now a stronghold for the nearly extinct Barasingha deer with around half of the world’s population resident in this park.
Relatively unheard of on the tiger circuit, Dudhwa offers an excellent experience nevertheless. Currently, tourism is in its infancy here so game drives do not require pre-booking and you will barely see any other jeeps. Plus the park is open year-round.
The safaris are still very affordable compared to parks in Central India. The local forest guides are not, as yet, brilliantly informed due to lack of tourism and education but with the opening of Jaagir Lodge (best accommodation available) which has excellent naturalists that accompany you on the game drives, this mitigates the issues with the local forest guides.
Morning and afternoon safaris are organised by jeep and boat. Cruise down the Girva River navigating dense swamps to see the gharials and the endangered Ganges river dolphins in their natural habitat.
