Tailor-Made Holiday

Highlights of Jordan

From the Rose city of Petra to the dunes of Wadi Rum and the shores of the dead sea

8 days

from $1,695pp (excluding flights)

Jordan is certainly one of the friendliest destinations you could wish to visit and a holiday here makes for a fascinating adventure. This Jordan holiday offers a wonderful introduction to the country.

  • Explore the Roman ruins of Jerash
  • As well as seeing Petra by day, visit by night, lit by candle and moonlight
  • Experience the silence of the desert at Wadi Rum
  • Pamper yourself with a soothing massage or with the well-known healing powers of Dead Sea mud

Jerash and Ajloun

From the capital city of Amman, travel north to visit the wonderfully preserved ancient ruins of Jerash as well as the 12th-century hilltop Muslim castle at Ajloun.

The Kings Highway

This ancient route connects the Christian town of Madaba, famed for its wonderful 6th-century mosaic map of the holy land and the iconic site of Petra in the south of the country. A slower route but well worth it for the host of historic sites and fabulous views along the way. Close to Madaba is the presumed burial place of Moses where a memorial stands with commanding views across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea towards Israel in the distance, a pilgrimage site for many. Further south on the route passing dramatic valleys, winding mountain roads and sandstone cliffs are the crusader castles of Kerak and Shobak.

The UNESCO World Heritage site of Petra is a highlight of any holiday to Jordan. Spend a full day exploring the temples, theatres and tombs of this wonderful site. If you have time to spare, a second day here would be easily filled. Visit Little Petra (Siq Al-Barid) where there are some rare examples of Nabataean paintings or for the energetic, brave the 850 steps up to the monastery.

Wadi Rum

Travel south from Petra to spend a day exploring the desert wilderness of Wadi Rum. This beautiful landscape is a mixture of rocky valleys, sand dunes and sheer cliffs where ancient caves hide prehistoric carvings. Home to nomadic Bedouin families it is also a great place to experience some true Bedouin hospitality with tea or coffee in one of the traditional goat hair tents that pepper the landscape.

The Dead Sea

From Petra, take the fast route north to spend a day at leisure and experience the bizarre sensation of floating in the dead sea.

Why not extend your holiday and spend a few days in the port city of Aqaba, located just under two hours south of Petra. With a year-round mild climate, this cosmopolitan feeling town is a nice place to spend a few days relaxing and enjoying some water sports. Located on the Gulf of Aqaba, neighbouring Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula there are also some wonderful dive sites within easy access.

Day 1

Fly London to Amman

Day 2

Full Day of Sightseeing in Jerash and Ajloun
Travel to the north of the country and the site of Jerash. This city is remarkable for its unbroken chain of human population. There you will find remains from as far back as Neolithic times, but Jerash's golden age really arrived with Roman rule. Today with many of its richly embellished marble and granite structures still standing, it is acknowledged as one of the best preserved Roman provincial towns in the world.

A short journey west through pine forests and olive groves will bring you to Ajloun and the castle of Qala'at Ar-Rabad. A fine example of Islamic architecture, the fortress dominated a wide stretch of the north Jordan Valley and protected communication routes between south Jordan and Syria. Today it is a fascinating warren of towers, chambers and galleries while its hilltop position offers staggering views of the Jordan Valley.

Day 3

Amman-Petra on the Kings Highway with Sightseeing

Travel south and join the 5,000 year old King’s Highway. Stop at Mt Nebo the memorial of Moses, the presumed site of the prophet’s death and burial place, with views across the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Ten minutes further on is Madaba, ’the City of Mosaics’. Madaba’s main attraction is the contemporary Greek Orthodox Church of St George, which is home to a wonderfully vivid 6th century Byzantine mosaic map showing Jerusalem and other holy sites.
Next stop is the Crusader fort of Kerak, which is a dark maze of stone-vaulted halls and endless passageways. The castle, whilst more imposing than beautiful, remains an example of the Crusaders’ architectural military genius.

Day 4

Petra Sightseeing
Visit the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Petra, accompanied by a private local guide.

Petra is the legacy of the Nabataeans, an industrious Arab people who settled in south Jordan more than 2,000 years ago. From here they dominated the trade routes of ancient Arabia, levying tolls and sheltering caravans laden with Indian spices and silks, African ivory and animal hides. The kingdom endured for centuries and became widely admired for its refined culture, massive architecture and ingenious complex of dams and water channels. By the 16th century however, Petra was completely lost, and remained so for 300 years until it was rediscovered by a Swiss traveller, Burckhardt, in 1812. View the 'Treasury', Roman-style 3,000-seat theatre, and numerous temples, facades, tombs, baths and funerary halls.

Petra by Night
An additional option would be to visit Petra by the light of 1,800 candles. Walk through the Siq to the Khazneh following a candle-lit path and enjoy the haunting music of the Bedouin at the Treasury.

Day 5

Wadi Rum Experience
Wadi Rum is a protected area covering 720 square kilometres of dramatic desert wilderness in the south of Jordan and approximately one hour 40 minutes' drive south of Petra.

Huge mountains of sandstone and granite emerge, sheer-sided, from wide sandy valleys to reach heights of 1,700 metres and more. Narrow canyons and fissures cut deep into the mountains many of which conceal ancient rock drawings etched by the peoples of the desert over millennia. Bedouin tribes still live among the mountains of Rum and their large goat-hair tents are a special feature of the landscape.

This unspoilt area of sandstone mountains, canyons and sand dunes is carpeted by a colourful explosion of 2,000 species of wildflower in the springtime. It is also famous as the location where T E Lawrence spent much of his time and where he wrote his famous Seven Pillars of Wisdom.

Explore the area by 4WD, on foot or by camel. Alternatively take to the skies by light aircraft or hot air balloon for an aerial view. Return to Petra to overnight.

Day 6

Drive from Petra to the Dead Sea

A journey time of approximately 3 hours.

The Dead Sea valley is typically Mediterranean with mild winters and hot summers and is a natural greenhouse rich in minerals. In ancient times it was one of the most fertile places in the Middle East and some of the world's oldest civilisations sprang up here.
