Haiti Holidays

Haiti was much in the news after the catastrophic earthquake that struck it in 2010. The outside perception can sometimes be that it is a county still racked by devastation and disease, but this is no longer the case. With a huge amount of global support and national strength, Haiti is getting back on its feet.  After an extremely difficult few decades, now is the time to explore this magical and fascinating country.

Why We Like Haiti

Of course there are beautiful Caribbean beaches and epic mountainous scenery but it’s the cultural and historic interest that make this a unique Caribbean destination.  We love Haiti for its rich cultural diversity, the French and African heritage, its white sand beaches and in particular, the stunning UNESCO mountain-top fortress of La Citadel.

What to Expect on your Haiti Holiday

Haiti shares the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic and has always been the lesser known of the two countries.  Discovered by Christopher Columbus during his voyage across the Atlantic in the 15th Century, Haiti is the third largest Caribbean nation, and the most mountainous.  Despite the country’s continuing recovery, travel in Haiti is not always easy or comfortable. Visiting Haiti is to experience the grittier side of the Caribbean but with improving infrastructure, investment by hotel brands and a receptive people, this is one of the most diverse Caribbean countries to explore.

Let us introduce you to the frayed French colonial town of Jacmel, the art scene and people of capital Port-au-Prince and the astonishing fortress of La Citadelle that seemingly ‘sails’ out of the mountains in the north.  We will take you to swim in azure waterfalls or to explore fascinating caves that run deep underground, some up to 2.5 km below.

Some Ideas for a Haiti Holiday

  • Climb the Citadelle (900metres above sea level) which is where the Haitian slaves defeated Napoleon’s army and established the first black republic.
  • Visit the iron market to buy art or the iron village to see it being made.
  • Swim in beautiful waterfalls such as the Bassin Bleu.
  • Explore one of the largest caves in the Caribbean, Grotte Marie Jeanne.
  • Indulge in the vibrant Port au Prince scene with street art, rum factories and great nightlife.
  • Witness a Voodoo ceremony or a cock fight – not for everyone but it is a strong part of the culture and heritage.
  • Visit Jacmel, a charming beach resort full of art and culture with a strong French influence.
