Illona Cross has been at the heart of Steppes’ Africa expertise for over 25 years. Born in Johannesburg, she came of age in a period when conservation and guiding were not open to women. She went on to pass the male-dominated Natal Parks Board cadetship during apartheid, forging a career that would take her across southern and eastern Africa as a guide, conservationist and trailblazer.
Her experience includes helping Conservation Corporation Africa establish the Ngorongoro Crater Lodge in Tanzania, where she served as senior guide. For Steppes, she led the first tour into Eritrea in over 75 years, widely regarded as a landmark journey.
To travel with Illona is to see Africa through a different lens. She brings historical insight, ecological understanding and lived experience together in a way few guides can. Mozambique, a country she knows and loves deeply, comes alive through her perspective: its wildlife, its people and its resilience.
Gorongosa National Park, at the heart of Mozambique, is one of Africa’s most inspiring conservation success stories. Its million-acre landscape ranges from open savannah and seasonal floodplains to the rainforest slopes of Mount Gorongosa. Once devastated by conflict, the park has been revived through a pioneering partnership with local communities. Today, elephants, lions, wild dogs and more than 400 bird species flourish once again, offering travellers exceptional wildlife encounters and a compelling story of renewal.
While staying at Muzimu Lodge, you will learn about the vital work to protect the pangolin, the world’s most trafficked mammal. Covered in distinctive scales and feeding on ants and termites, pangolins are crucial to the ecosystem yet highly vulnerable to illegal trade. Gorongosa’s conservation team rescues and rehabilitates confiscated animals, preparing them for release. Gain rare insight into this careful process and the community-led efforts securing a future for this extraordinary species.
Mozambique’s coastline stretches for over 1,500 miles, a captivating sweep of white sand, turquoise waters and swaying palms. Fishing villages line the shore beside coral lagoons and mangrove are alive with birdlife. Offshore, the Bazaruto Archipelago reveals an untouched paradise of dunes, clear shallows and vibrant reefs where turtles, dolphins and tropical fish thrive. Tranquil and timeless, this coastline offers a serene contrast to Mozambique’s wild interior — the perfect finale to a journey of discovery.
