Venture beyond the 55th parallel where taiga forests meet wild tundra and polar bears outnumber people. An extraordinary expedition combining Inuit culture and the spectacular Arctic wildlife of the uninhabited Gyrfalcon Islands in northern Quebec’s Ungava Bay.

Stay in a heated shelter pod at an isolated basecamp, only accessible for one month of the year before the ice returns. Explore by bike, ATV or on foot to encounter polar bears, muskox, Arctic fox and Arctic tern. By boat go in search of minke and beluga whales, bearded seals and seabirds. Experience Nunavik food at its best, witness some of the world’s highest tidal elevations and on clear nights, inky skies illuminate with the Northern Lights.

This Canadian Arctic expedition is available for 2025 departures on August 3, 9, 15, 21 and 27, as well as September 2, 8 and 14, 2025. Speak to our experts to secure your place.

Day 1

Montreal - Kuujjuaq - Tiercel Island

Begin the expedition with a group charter flight from Montreal to Kuujjuaq (approximately two hours, 20 minutes). Transfer to a Twin Otter aircraft for a short flight to Tiercel Island. On landing, it’s a 2-hour, 20-minute walk to the camp, so a reasonable level of fitness is required. Settle into your private heated dome before welcome drinks and briefing.

Days 2-6

Gyrfalcon Islands

Spend the next few days with an Inuit guide exploring the Gyrfalcon archipelago by boat, fat bike and ATV. Meals are all Nunavik inspired dishes, including arctic char, mussels, scallops and berries.

Day 7

Tiercel Island - Kuujjuaq - Montreal

After breakfast, fly back to Kuujjuaq for an onward flight back to Montreal where the trip ends.

Polar Bears and Muskox

For one month each year, from late August to late September, witness polar bears hitching lifts on ice floes that have broken away from the pack ice due to the warmer summer temperatures. See muskox and black bears stocking up for winter on Arctic flowers, grass and berries, as well as geese, falcon, eagles, arctic tern, and snowy and great horned owls. Navigate the archipelago by boat in search of bearded seals, minke, beluga and if luck is on your side, humpback whales.

Expedition Activities

With Inuk guides, spend five full days traversing the spectacular territory of Ungava Bay by ATV, fat bike, boat or on foot. Learn about Arctic willow, crowberry, sedges, mosses and lichens that carpet the land, and the wildlife that feeds on them. From shore, witness some of the highest tidal elevations in the world reaching up to 55-feet and when the tides are favourable, explore the bay by boat.

Inuit Culture

As well as exposure to fascinating wildlife, this polar expedition equally emphasises Inuit culture. Proud of their ancestral heritage, owners James and Jonathan who grew up in Kuujjuaq, a small Inuit village 75 miles southeast of Ungava camp, share their Nunavik Inuit culture through experiences such as throat singing and stories of how generations have survived in such remote and harsh landscapes.

Private Domes

After a day exploring the Arctic tundra, retreat to a private dome equipped with heating, a twin or double bed, a vanity sink and a flushing toilet. Each of the five domes are made from sturdy fibreglass designed to withstand weather extremes of Nunavik’s cold nights. Share expedition stories and photographs over a meal prepared using local Nunavik ingredients, such as scallops, arctic char and berries. Speak to the chef through the open kitchen and see how they resourcefully incorporate fresh ingredients from the land and sea into their diet.
