Why travel with Steppes Travel to Malaysian Borneo?

This tour is perfect for photographers wanting to follow orangutans in their natural habitat, arguably one of the world’s most special wildlife experiences. Immerse yourself in the pristine rainforest of Malaysia Borneo with the expert guidance of our team of local experts and photographer George Chan.

Charles Darwin called Borneo “one great wild untidy luxuriant hothouse made by nature for herself“. It is wild and exciting and remains the preserve of the true traveller.

Do you have to be an experienced photographer to join this tour?

Whether you have a simple point and shoot camera or a sophisticated SLR, George Chan will be on hand to give you tips on how to improve your photography and videography skills. Therefore, you don’t need to be an experienced photographer to join.

The maximum group size of just ten people will allow George time to spend time with you at different locations to help you get the perfect shot and develop your wildlife photography skills.

What happens on a typical day?

Most days will be active, spent in search of wildlife, with plenty of time to photograph wildlife. Early morning and late afternoon light is perfect for photography so there will be some early starts in order to try and get the best sightings and shots. There will be some short day and night walks. Regular rest stops will be made to stretch legs and take photographs.

What wildlife might I see during this tour?

Sabah is home to some of the last remaining areas of primary tropical rainforest in South East Asia. Kinabatangan River is home to orangutans, pygmy elephants, hornbills, macaques, leaf monkeys, otters and more. Nocturnal life is spectacular including civet cats, snakes, frogs, and owls. The Danum Valley is the best place in Borneo to see orangutans in the wild, alongside a huge diversity of vegetation including ferns, orchids and pitcher plants.

What will the weather in Borneo be like in September?

September is the end of the dry season with hot, dry air being blown in from Australia. Throughout Sabah, there is also the possibility of unsettled wet weather at times, especially in rain forested areas. The rain will normally fall in the late afternoon.

On this trip, the accommodation aims to get you in the best locations to allow you the opportunity to truly immerse yourself in nature and allow ample time to photograph the flora and fauna that surrounds you.

In Sandakan, you will be based near Sepilok Rehabilitation Centre. Continuing onto the Kinabatangan River region, you will be staying in moderate lodge accommodation. The highlight of the trip will be your time spent at Borneo’s most luxurious eco-lodges, Borneo Rainforest Lodge. While your stay in Kota Kinabalu will be at the excellent Hyatt Regency.
