Day 1


Arrive in Medan and meet with Ashley, Regina and Ian at a welcome dinner for the group.

Day 2


Visit the SOCP Rescue and Rehabilitation Station.

Day 3

Medan - Bukit Lawang

Travel by road to Bukit Lawang. Visit the Environmental Education Center Bohorok before an evening presentation by Regina Frey.

Day 4

Bukit Lawang

Spend the day trekking in protected rainforest, before an evening presentation by Dr Ian Singleton.

Day 5

Bukit Lawang - Medan - Jakarta

Drive back to Medan and then fly on to Jakarta.

Day 6

Jakarta - Pangkalan Bun – Tanjung Puting

Fly to Pangkalan Bun, then travel into Tanjung Puting National Park by boat. Visit the orangutan feeding sites here, before an evening presentation by Ashley Leiman.

Day 7

Tanjung Puting

Explore the national park by boat, visiting feeding sites and Camp Leakey.

Day 8

Tanjung Puting - Lamandau

Travel by boat to the Lamandau Wildlife Reserve, a release site for reintroduced and rescued orangutans.

Day 9


Spend another day in the Lamandau Wildlife Reserve.

Day 10

Pangkalan Bun - Jakarta

Visit Yayorin, a local NGO, before flying back to Jakarta.

Day 11


Transfer to the airport for your onward flight.

Orangutan Foundation

The Orangutan Foundation founded in 1990 is a UK-registered charity working to conserve the critically endangered orangutan and its globally important habitat; the tropical forests of Borneo and Sumatra. The Orangutan Foundation has developed a diverse range of programmes including:

  • Habitat Protection – 10 guard posts
  • Five orangutan monitoring & reintroduction camps
  • Community Education
  • Wildlife Research
  • Improve the management of orangutan populations outside of conservation areas.

The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme

The Sumatran Orangutan Conservation Programme (SOCP) is a collaborative initiative between the Indonesia-based NGO the Yayasan Ekosistem Lestari (YEL; Sustainable Ecosystem Foundation), Swiss-based NGO the PanEco Foundation.  The SOCP works on all aspects of conservation of the Critically Endangered Sumatran orangutan and Tapanuli orangutan including:

  • Rescue, quarantine and reintroduction of illegal pet orangutans to form new, genetically viable and self-sustaining wild populations
  • Surveys and monitoring of remaining wild populations
  • Research on conservation and behavioural ecology of wild orangutans
  • Habitat conservation
  • Conservation education and awareness raising

We have worked with institutions such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and run wildlife tours in conjunction with conservation agencies such as Fauna & Flora International, Wildlife Conservation Society, the Orangutan Foundation, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Jane Goodall Institute.

2.Size Matters

Our average group size is typically eight to ten people, smaller than other group tours typically offered – a factor which many of our clients appreciate. Travelling as part of a smaller group provides a more intimate, personalised and relaxed atmosphere.

We have developed an enviable pool of expertise from which to choose our tour experts, who we carefully select based on their knowledge, companionship and personality. Often, these experts can use their influence to facilitate private access to sites not typically open to the public.

Travelling on your own? Our group tours are perfect for solo travellers, as travelling as part of an organised group in faraway places provides security and peace of mind. We handle all of the arrangements for you and there will be a local tour guide on hand throughout to provide advice and help if needed, as well as the expertise of a Tour expert.


To allow flexibility, our group tours do not include international flights as standard. We can arrange international flights on your behalf, please get in touch with our travel experts for a quote. All international flights from the UK are ATOL protected.
