Gir National Park

Many come to Gir because, outside of Africa, it is the only place with wild lions. Established in 1965 the national park has a lion breeding programme which has been a success with near on 600 lions recorded. The national park is teak wood dry forest and dominated by grasslands, and lions will roam freely early mornings and evenings.

Wildlife, Velavadar, Gujarat, India

Velavadar National Park

Velavadar is famous for its elegant black buck and a host of other wildlife species. The unique grassland ecosystem of Velavadar National Park is vital in supporting herds of antelopes and in conserving other important local species such as wolves, foxes, jackals, wild boars, hares and the very rare and endemic lesser florican (a bustard). The florican used to be widespread but its range has contracted and numbers have plummeted in recent decades. Today, the largest population survives here in Velavadar. The local avian cast is diverse including larks and sand grouse, but it is towards dusk that Velavadar takes on another significant role as the roosting site for harriers. Raptors that have been out hunting during the day return here to sleep in safety, these are mainly Montagu’s and pallid harriers and sometimes their numbers exceed 2,000 birds making this the largest known harrier roost in the world.

Little Rann of Kutch

The word ‘rann’ means ‘salty desert’ and while travelling through the Little Rann of Kutch, a salty desert is all you see. A jeep safari is the best way to explore this enormous expanse. Visit the ‘bets’, islands on the ancient seabed that now form higher ground covered with grass and scrub. These ‘bets’ support a variety of wildlife including the gudkhur (Asiatic wild ass) which is not found anywhere else, nilgai or blue bull (India’s largest antelope), chinkara (Indian gazelle), jungle and desert cats, blackbuck (Indian antelope) and a large variety of birds including cranes and flamingos.

Leopard, Kanha National Park, India
Leopard, India

Bera

Until recently Bera was an unknown part of Rajasthan, gaining recent popularity due to its amazing leopards sightings. The backdrop of the Aravalli Range with its scrub land vegetation and small hillocks with caves, provide the perfect setting for leopards. The Rabaris live amongst the leopards and leopards often frequent local temples.

Why a Steppes expert-led group tour

1.Experience Matters

We have been running insightful and groundbreaking group tours since our inception in 1989. We have worked with institutions such as the British Museum and Victoria & Albert Museum and run wildlife tours in conjunction with conservation agencies such as Fauna & Flora International, Wildlife Conservation Society, the Orangutan Foundation, Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund and the Jane Goodall Institute.

2.Size Matters

Our average group size is typically eight to ten people, smaller than other group tours typically offered – a factor which many of our clients appreciate. Travelling as part of a smaller group provides a more intimate, personalised and relaxed atmosphere.

4.It’s about who you know

We have developed an enviable pool of expertise from which to choose our tour experts, who we carefully select based on their knowledge, companionship and personality. Often, these experts can use their influence to facilitate private access to sites not typically open to the public.

3.Like-Minded People

Steppes Travellers are like-minded people – interesting, interested and curious. Our group tours aim to create an easy and informal atmosphere – we have a lot of fun on our tours and many friendships have been formed.

5.Value for money

Our tours are well-priced to ensure you get real value for money. We include gratuities on the majority of our tours and do not pass on currency surcharges. We strive to look after single travellers as well as we can, keeping single supplements to a minimum.

6.Peace of Mind

When you travel on one of our group tours, you will be looked after by our local agents and your tour expert with the back-up of our 24-hour emergency number and duty manager. All our holidays are fully bonded and protected – our ATOL number is ATOL 6495.
