Travel to the Snaefellsnes Peninsula, a paradise for birdlife, with sandy beaches on one side, mountains on the other and Snaefellsjokull glacier towering above. Visit the basalt cliffside columns at Gerduberg and the waterfalls at Hraunfossar, reaching Kirkjufell Mountain and Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall before sunset.

Day 3

Snaefellsnes Peninsula (Hotel Budir)

Continue exploring the incredible scenery of the Snaefellsnes Peninsula today. Highlights include the volcano top Snaefellsjokull glacier and the sandy beach of Djupalonssandur at its foot. Also visit Hellnar, an area of rugged shore cliffs, sea caves and volcanic lava formations which are rich in bird life.

Day 4

Snaefellsnes Peninsula to Siglufjordur (Siglo Hotel)

An early departure for a long days drive to the north of the Island, traversing constantly changing landscapes. Visit Kolugljufur Canyon which is home to many beautiful waterfalls, Flodhidh Lake and Kalfshamarsviti Lighthouse before arriving at the charming town of Siglufjordur.

Day 5

Siglufjordur to Myvatn (Fosshotel Myvatn)

Travel across the north of the island towards the geothermal area of Lake Myvatn. Stop to visit the remote Aldeyjarfoss waterfall (some walking involved), as well as the iconic Godafoss waterfall. End the day at Lake Myvatn, a shallow eutrophic lake situated in an active volcanic region which attracts numerous waterbirds.

Day 6

Myvatn (Fosshotel Myvatn)

Today explore the volcanic Myvatn area. Circumnavigating the lake allows varied viewpoints of the surrounding landscapes including Hverfell crater mountain, formed during an eruption approximately 2,500 years ago. Visit the lava formations of Dimmuborgir, see the Skutustadagigar pseudo-craters, the Krafla caldera with its crater lake and the lunar landscapes of Namaskard.

Day 7

Myvatn to Egilsstadir (Hotel 1001 Nott)

Journey east today with plenty of opportunities to photograph remote churches against spectacular mountainous backdrops, as well as the unique grass-covered buildings for which Iceland is known. Stop to approach Europe’s second most powerful waterfall on foot – Dettifoss is around 100 metres wide with a drop of about 45 metres.

Day 8

Egilsstadir to Jokulsarlon (Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon)

Journey to eastern Iceland today, a spectacular drive passing beautiful bays, remote fishing villages and incredible coastal scenery. The final destination is Vestrahorn Mountain, on the Stokksnes peninsula, and one of the most impressive scenes in all of Iceland. The eastern fjords are also home to many bird species.

Day 9

Jokulsarlon (Fosshotel Glacier Lagoon)

Take a private boat ride on Fjallsarlon lagoon to experience beautiful mountain scenery and icebergs of all shapes and colours. Onto ‘diamond beach’, where pieces of clear glacier ice wash ashore, covering the black sand.

Spring in Iceland

April in Iceland offers extended daylight, providing ample time to capture images of spring landscapes, contrasted by lingering snow and ice. The soft, golden light during sunrise and sunset adds depth and drama to the scenery. Wildlife is awakening, with many bird species nesting along cliffs or resting and feeding during migration. Waterfalls are at their most dramatic, as snow melt rushes into canyons and rivers. Adding to the allure and drama, Iceland’s weather is famously changeable, often delivering four seasons in a single day. With luck, there is also the chance of seeing the Aurora Borealis…

Tectonic Landscapes

Iceland’s volcanic landscape is a dramatic showcase of the Earth’s raw power. Millennia of tectonic activity have shaped rugged coastlines, black sand beaches, towering basalt cliffs, and steaming lunar landscapes.

The Myvatn region offers one of the finest displays of these volcanic moonscapes. Formed by an eruption over 2,000 years ago, the lake is encircled by unique features such as Skutustadagigar’s pseudocraters and the imposing Hverfell crater. Nearby, explore Dimmuborgir’s surreal lava formations, sculpted from a collapsed lava lake, and Krafla’s vast caldera, home to a vivid blue geothermal pool. At Namaskard, vibrant sulfur-streaked earth, bubbling mud pools, and steaming fumaroles provide fabulous photo opportunities and a striking reminder of Iceland’s geothermal energy at work.

Icelandic Waterfalls

‘Foss’ or waterfalls across Iceland range from towering cascades to twin tiered, semi circular torrents and more delicate streams. Fueled by glacial melt and volcanic activity, these majestic falls carve through gorges and flow into otherworldly terrains of lava fields and basalt columns, creating dynamic photo opportunities. On sunny days, the spray often forms rainbows, adding a touch of magic. Among them, Skogafoss – fed by Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull glaciers – is considered one of Iceland‘s most elegant falls, thundering 60 metres into a small canyon below and easily accessible on foot.
