Family Holidays

Not all classrooms have walls…it is clear that a growing number of parents see the educational value in travelling, not to mention the advantages of simply spending time together on a stimulating adventure without the distraction of routine.

Our family holiday specialists, all of whom travel with their own children, will help you create long-lasting memories that will remind your kids just how cool you really were.

Before the age of eight, your children’s holiday needs are simple; they want to be near a pool or the sea. Once they are eighteen, parents are ‘uncool’ and they’ll want to travel with their friends. That leaves you with a ten-year window in which to plan a schedule of exceptional family holidays.

We take pride in our attention to detail. On a family holiday, each day needs careful curation to ensure your children are stimulated but not exhausted. We’ll take care not to include long, hot road journeys. We’ll take care to ensure there are educational aspects to your holiday but we’ll be just as sure to include a large dollop of fun along the way. We’ll take care to give you free time to make your own, spontaneous discoveries and we’ll also factor in time for parents to reconnect.

Tailor-made Family Holidays

There is no such thing as an ‘off-the-shelf’ family holiday – what might work for one family will not work for another – but here a few ideas to whet your appetite:

  • Be a junior ranger and track meerkats, pangolin and rhino in South Africa’s Tswalu Kalahari
  • Snorkel alongside sea lions in the Galapagos
  • Sleep in a hammock in the rainforest canopy
  • Walk like an Egyptian on your private Nile cruise
  • Dog sledge in Swedish Lapland
  • Cycle along the backwaters of Kerala
  •  Go on a bug-hunt on a Madagascar family adventure

We look forward to opening your children’s eyes to the wonderful world of travel.

South Africa and Kenya

Combine all of Kenya’s highlights on a fun, family-friendly holiday that includes both spectacular wildlife and lots of activities. Go mountain biking, try horse riding and dive off waterfalls in Laikipia, before learning Maasai bush skills and spotting big cats in the conservancies of the Masai Mara.

In the South Africa, explore the game reserves of the Kalahari, Madikwe or Eastern Cape, learn bush skills and explore on horseback. Even dart, notch and tag a rhino as a family, getting hands-on with conservation in Kruger National Park.

Galapagos Islands

These magical islands are like nowhere else on earth. An incredible archipelago with unique creatures unafraid of humans. Perfect for children, and some adults, who lack the patience to sit and wait for wildlife to appear.

Whether exploring by boat or from a land base, your national park guide will show you all the islands have to offer both above and below the water – pirate caves, sandy beaches, volcanic lava tunnels, dancing blue-footed boobies and nostril squirting, prehistoric-looking marine iguanas.

Illona Cross

Born in a small South African town, I have always followed my passion for nature and discovery. After studying Nature Conservation in Pretoria, I was one of the first women to complete a very tough cadetship in the Natal Parks Board. It was here where I cut my teeth in African wildlife management.

Chris is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Africa.

25 years ago, my first trip to Africa took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, I stayed for two years. Whilst there, I was mistaken for a priest, attacked by sharks and arrested. Yet the countless, clattering journeys opened my eyes to the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people. My recent trips are undoubtedly more comfortable, but the welcome is as warm as ever and the best experiences are still those I never see coming.

I love to squeeze as much out of my day as possible. An outdoors fanatic, I love to delve into harsh environments having summited numerous mountains and trail running into the unknown whenever I get the chance – whether at home or overseas. Funnily enough, it didn’t start like that. It took a few years for the burning fire of adventure to truly take light with my eyes opened by the adventures travel could afford.

Kate Hitchen

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.

Clare Higginson

It was my passion for languages that first encouraged me to leave the UK behind and grab my rucksack. Since then, it’s been a mixture of intriguing cultures, jaw-dropping landscapes and the wonder of seeing animals in their natural habitat that sees me continuously extending my travel wish list.

Charlotte Lawton

Charlotte is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Asia.

My strong sense of belonging in Asia stemmed from a childhood in Hong Kong and Nepal. My Grandmother was born in a tent in India. Some of my clearest memories are of walking through a dense, tropical jungle while hailstones the size of cricket balls rained down on us; of being carried on my father’s shoulders as we trekked through the Himalayas; my mother wearing flipflops on a snowy mountainside; and me falling into Dal Lake in Srinagar as we disembarked from our houseboat.
