CoExistence by George Butler

The CoExistence campaign is a response to the increasing overlap between the human and animal world, which is in part responsible for the spread of deadly zoonotic diseases like COVID-19. The aim of the migration of a 100-strong herd is to raise awareness and funds to make sure humans and wildlife can coexist better both in the UK and around the world.

On the 15th June, George Butler will be launching the first exhibition of its kind mapping coexistence between humans and wildlife around the world. This previously unseen collection of illustrated maps and artists prints will accompany the CoExistence herd of 100, life-size, lantana elephants in London’s Royal Parks and Berkeley Square this summer.

The CoExistence campaign combines the art direction of Ruth Ganesh and the Elephant Family and the creativity of The Real Elephant Collective from Tamul Nadu in India. Butler has spent the last 10 years documenting conflict, in Iraq, Syria, and Yemen and the migrations that people make when they are faced with great trauma. During lockdown, he turned his attention to the antithesis of conflict – coexistence, and the realisation that in order to thrive into the future we need to coexist better.

But the message is simple – humans need to share space with the other magnificent species in order for our planet to survive.

CoExistence - Giving Back

40% of the profit raised from the sales of the prints and 20% from the original artwork will be donated to the CoExistence campaign and will be used to protect rural communities from conflicts with wild animals, encouraging the industry to factor in the need of a wider ecosystem and expand protected areas to give other life the necessary space to exist.

Projects made possible by CoExistence include the securement of wildlife corridors which enable safe movement for animals and people, the expansion of national parks and the protection of vital tribal knowledge and livelihoods.
