Luxor

The town of Luxor is located on the east bank of the River Nile, the start or end to many Nile Cruise itineraries. It offers a range of accommodation, restaurants, a museum, an interesting souq and is home to some of Egypt’s most visited and famous sites.

Luxor offers plenty of activities to keep one busy, whether staying for a couple of days or longer.

From Luxor, cruises on the Nile begin or end and it is a short journey, either by road or by boat, to the west bank of the Nile and the sights of the Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and Hatshepsut Temple. On the east bank, Karnak Temple and Luxor Temple are easily visited by calèche or by taxi.

The Valley of the Kings

The Valley of the Kings is an ancient burial site. Of the 62 known tombs, only 11 have electricity, the most famous being that of Tutankhamun. The mortuary temple of Hatshepsut is a short walk or a taxi ride from the Valley of the Kings and it has been heralded as “the finest building in Egypt”. Together they make a wonderful half-day excursion.

It is also possible to sail on a “Felucca”, which is a traditional working boat, which, in the majority of cases, have retired from industry, and now work in tourism. Some people opt to sail as far as Edfu in these boats, whilst others will prefer the more comfortable cruise boats. A four-day programme on the Nile will include the sites at Luxor, will stop on route at Edfu and Kom Ombo, before finally reaching Aswan.

Personal Egyptologist in Luxor

As the sun rises over the temples dedicated to the Gods and sets over the mortuary tombs on the bank of the Nile, it was mesmerising listening to Ahmed, our private guide. Listening to the stories in wonder at the mysteries of the traditions and rituals of Ancient Egypt, whilst being mesmerised by the architecture is incredible. Having our own Egyptologist was a special experience and one I would recommend to anyone visiting the Valley of the Kings and the East Bank in Luxor.
