Hue

Hue is an architectural delight situated in Central Eastern Vietnam; it is full of historic temples, tombs and pagodas, a truly remarkable place that was almost left to perish.

The history behind the near disappearance of Hue was down to the Nguyen dynasty, who were quite happy to let the historic remains crumble away.

It wasn’t until in the 1990s that the People’s Committee of Vietnam realised the importance of Hue and in 1993 its historic treasures were declared a UNESCO World Heritage site, and restoration work began to maintain it. Hue is a truly remarkable place and well worth the visit during a holiday to Vietnam.

Sitting at the mouth of the inappropriately named Perfume River, this former royal capital has a Citadel modelled on the Forbidden City in Beijing. A boat journey upstream allows those who visit it to explore the Valley of the Kings where many of the country’s emperors are buried in elaborate tombs.

Hue is a historic gem, and for those interested in Vietnamese artefacts and artwork it is a must-see. However, there is more than meets the eye in the once bustling capital, including an amazing Imperial cuisine perfect for those with an interest in inspired cuisine.

Paul Craven

Paul is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Central Asia and the Silk Route.

I first travelled to Vietnam in 1988, when tourism was barely a concept, and have been visiting Central Asia since it was still behind the Iron Curtain. Such first-hand experience makes all the difference when talking to clients. I know the importance of asking questions, not taking the first answer as gospel, and matching the right destination to the right person.

Clare Wiggins

My love for Asia began with living there. Based in Vietnam and then Malaysia, I also explored the surrounding regions before eventually finding my way back home via China and the Trans-Siberian railway. At Steppes Travel, I get to share that love for Asia every day, helping clients experience the places I know best as if they were locals themselves.
