Rajasthan

If you only visit India once, make sure to set your sights on Rajasthan.

The region certainly lives up to the hype: full of colour and culture, delicious cuisine, immense beauty and glorious history. A holiday to Rajasthan is the perfect place to begin any journey through India.

Our first choice to travel around Rajasthan is by private car and driver. This way you can sit back and take in the incredible scenery, avoid any public transport delays and be confident that you will reach your destination in good time. Having the freedom to stop on a whim and to ensure that you don’t miss those serendipitous moments is a must. We use air-conditioned vehicles, all meeting our strict criteria. Most drives between destinations will take between four to five hours. An alternative to road travel is a first-class train journey.

Staying in Rajasthan

Forts and palaces abound and, while many have been transformed into small heritage hotels — some such as Shahpura Bagh or Samode Haveli are run by their princely owners. There are also larger magnificent buildings, such as the beautiful Taj Lake Palace Hotel in Udaipur and the Umaid Bhawan in Jodhpur. Our India experts can talk you through the choices available to make sure you stay in the type of hotel that suits you.

Where to stay

Some of the wonderful places to stay that we frequently recommended.

Taj Lake Palace £££££

  • India

The Lake Palace or Jag Niwas was built in 1754 by Maharana Jagat Singh II, who gave his name to this elegant white building. Now a wonderful heritage hotel, it was originally built as a summer retreat for the royal family. With 85 rooms and suites, cool white marble walls and coloured glass windows make the Lake Palace something of a marble legend as it rises majestically from the waters of Lake Pichola. The setting alone makes for a memorable stay.

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way.
