The protected area is home to tigers, leopards, Asiatic black bears, sloth bears, swamp deer, rhinoceros, elephants, chitals, hog deer, barking deer, sambars, wild pigs and around 500 bird species.
The Dudhwa Tiger Reserve comprises of the Dudhwa National Park, Katarniaghat Wildlife Sanctuary, Pilibhit Tiger Reserve and Kishanpur Wildlife Sanctuary.
One of the finest forests in India, some of these trees are more than 150 years old and over 70 ft tall. It represents one of the few remaining examples of a highly diverse and productive Terai ecosystem, supporting a large number of endangered species.
Billy Arjan Singh successfully hand-reared and reintroduced zoo-born tigers and leopards into the wilds of Dudhwa. In the mid-1980s, Indian Rhinoceros were reintroduced into Dudhwa from Assam and Nepal. The park is a stronghold of the Barasingha (12 antlers deer) and around half of the world’s Barasinghas are present in the park. The variety of animals knocks the spots off any park in Central India.
Relatively unheard of on the tiger circuit, Dudhwa offers an excellent experience nevertheless. Currently, tourism is in its infancy here and game drives do not require pre-booking and you will barely see any other jeeps. The safaris are still very affordable compared to parks in Central India. The local guides are not as yet brilliantly informed, due to lack of tourism and education but the new and wonderful Jaagir Lodge has excellent naturalists that will accompany you on the game drives.
During the safaris, you have a chance of seeing tiger, wild elephant and one-horned rhino. You can also take a boat on the Girva River, navigating dense swamps to see the gharials and the endangered Ganges river dolphins in their natural habitat.
