An area of outstanding natural beauty, unsurprisingly the Italian Lakes became the place where generations of writers, poets and composers rented lakeside villas in which to work, so inspired by the glorious scenery that surrounded them.

Milan and the Lakes

The Italian Lakes lie in the region of Lombardy in Northern Italy. Milan is the natural gateway to this region, situated on the flatter plains of Southern Lombardy. For the most part, people pass straight through Milan to reach the glorious Lakes in the north, however, there is plenty worth seeing in Milan such as Leonardo da Vinci’s mural of “The Last Supper” on the refectory wall of the Santa Maria Delle Grazie.

Lake Garda is the largest lake and attracts a large number of sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts. Lake Como has the most striking scenery, surrounded by tall peaks that rise from the lake edge and opulent, luxurious villas and palazzi. The hiking in the area is superb if you feel the need to get away from the Lake. Lake Maggiore has a much flatter shoreline and is more sedate with some charming gardens and walks to enjoy. Whichever lake you decide to visit, time can be spent relaxing beside the lake, eating at bustling pavement cafes and traditional pizzerias, walking, cycling, sailing and visiting enchanting gardens and villas that line their shores.

The 18th-century neoclassical Villa Sola Cabiati was once the summer home of Milan’s Duke Gabrio Serbelloni and is now owned by the noble Sola Cabiati family. Ranked high on the list of the area’s most breathtaking properties, it has also cultivated an air of mystery, with its frescoed walls, lush gardens, and museum-quality furnishings. Largely inaccessible to the public for decades, Villa Sola Cabiati is now being managed by the five-star Grand Hotel Tremezzo. The historic villa makes a natural pair with the hotel, which has been a family-owned fixture on Lake Como’s shores since 1910. The villa can only be rented in its entirety for up to 12 people, ensuring the kind of privacy Lake Como’s royal residents and noble visitors have enjoyed for centuries.

Katie Benden

The excitement of travelling the world has always hugely appealed. Largely cemented from my first solo trip to Egypt and the Middle East. The crazy hustle and bustle of Cairo was a huge assault on the senses, scrambling through the claustrophobic tunnels of the Great pyramid took me out of my comfort zone and I was left humbled by the warm hospitality of the Nubian people in Aswan as we shared dinner together.

Kate Hitchen

My travels were first inspired by my love of the UK, which I take as much pleasure in exploring as countries far and wide. For me, travel is all about the adventure, the people I meet and the food I sample along the way. In fact, I am never happier than when I’m cycling, trekking or simply eating my way through a country! My heart and head regularly pull me east, notably to India but I may also be found wandering through the galleries and piazzas of Italy or daydreaming about fresh ceviche in the far west.
