Stann Creek covers a large part of the South Coast of Belize as well as the mountainous jungle inland. A number of villages dot the coast where various cultures dominate.
Dangriga is the capital of the Stann Creek district and is a transport hub and commercial fishing centre where visitors find strong Garifuna influences. The Garifuna people are descendants of African slaves and indigenous Caribs, and have a language, music and dance all of their own.
Just 15 miles south of Dangriga is the Garifuna village of Hopkins located on a beautiful curve of white sands. Here the locals continue to fish, carve canoes and make drums as their ancestors did before. Finally at the tip of a spit lies Placencia, the main destination that visitors flock to for some of Belize’s most spectacular beaches and wildlife opportunities and laidback charm of the Creole people.
Apart from just enjoying the lovely beaches and exploring the mangroves and jungle interior on your holiday to Belize, treat yourselves to an ice-cream from the parlour in Placencia town. Also, for a true local dining experience try a creole dish of rice and shrimp from the cafe.
