Nairobi Skyline, Kenya

Used mainly as a quick stopover, Nairobi is an interesting city with some good places to visit.

Central Nairobi is like many other African cities, with traffic jams, noise and a hint of chaos. But the suburbs are quite different, with excellent markets, restaurants and great places of interest to visit, like The Daphne Sheldrick Elephant Orphanage, the wonderful Giraffe Centre and the Karen Blixen Museum.

What do you really love doing? We curate your itinerary especially for you.

This plantation-style property has 45 spacious suites, all overlooking the garden, towards the distant Ngong Hills. The design is classically stylish but set up in a such a way as to give the hotel a much smaller, more intimate atmosphere than the number of rooms might suggest. From the sweeping staircase that greets you on arrival, to the polished lobby and beautifully manicured gardens bursting with colour, Hemingways is the place to enjoy a few luxuries. The dining is considered some of the best in Kenya, with their famous steaks perfectly grilled over a trendy Josper charcoal oven.

  • Unusual

Giraffe Manor is a beautiful, eccentric country house located in an upmarket suburb of Nairobi, a hop and skip from major attractions. Originally built in 1932, and saved from dereliction in 1974 by US conservationist Betty Leslie-Melville and her husband Jock. Giraffe Manor has two main buildings – the original Manor House with six bedrooms, and Garden Manor, a four-bedroom annexe, all beautifully decorated. There aren’t many places you stay where a giraffe is likely to pop its head through the window and steal a bit of your breakfast.

Jackie Devereux

I was born in Zimbabwe. With a dad who was in the police force, we moved from place to place. I have always been passionate about travel. My grandparents mentioned that our ancestors set off from the Horn of Africa – Ethiopia – looking for better cattle pastures. They ended up settling in the south-eastern hills of Zimbabwe, in the Great Zimbabwe area.

Aged five and with my Curious George toy safely tucked under my arm, I set off with my family to travel around Europe in an orange VW minibus. Looking back on the adventures we had along the way, I now know that this was where my love for travel and exploring began.

He has walked, driven, mountain-biked, ridden and paddled past some of Africa’s most exciting wildlife whilst on safari in Kenya. And such is the style and comfort of the country’s lodges, all this was whilst within easy reach of an ice-cold G&T.
