Looking out from small hill, near Sarara Camp, Matthews Range, Kenya

Matthews Range

This remote mountain range in northern Kenya rises up from the flatter lands of Samburu, north of the Ewaso Nyiro River.

Rising to almost 3,000 metres, these dramatic mountains are carpeted with forests, in sharp contrast with the drier, sparser lands that fill the surrounding valleys.

The area is home to several wildlife conservancies and, in spite of a tough climate, animals thrive here. It is also home to numerous hardy Samburu communities. Grazing cattle beside the foothills of the mountains, they practice a way of life that remains largely unchanged in modern times.

Sarara Camp

Looking over a vast area of community-managed wilderness, Sarara Camp affords some of the most dramatic views of northern Kenya. The mountains of the Matthews Range reflect in the still waters of the rock pool that lies in front of Sarara’s thatched lounge area, whilst all its tents look out on the same vista.
