The theme of this year’s World Ocean Day is Revitalisation: collective action for the ocean. The focus is to highlight the communities, ideas and solutions that are working together to protect and revitalise the ocean and everything it sustains.

So, this month we’re celebrating our incredible oceans by showcasing some coastal properties and organisations that are collectively working to protect, sustain and rejuvenate it.

Our oceans cover over 70% of our planet and our seas capture more carbon than trees.
Travel is not only about connections and experiences but also about supporting and preserving.

INDONESIA
Misool Eco Resort
Misool is a world-class private island hideaway accessible only by boat. It lies in the far west of Indonesia, forming part of the remote and unspoilt Raja Ampat archipelago.

Positive Impact: Every stay here helps fund the management and protection of Misool’s 1,220-square-kilometre marine reserve. It comprises two no-take zones – the first in the region – which provide a precious sanctuary for fish and other marine species.

STAY AT MISOOL

MADAGASCAR
Anjajavy On a remote peninsula in northern Madagascar, this beautiful coastal lodge lies between pristine beaches and a private forest reserve. On land, lemurs leap between trees, whilst in the water, turtles float above coral reefs.

Positive Impact: The lodge’s on-land reserve extends 400 metres into the ocean, providing a haven for tropical fish species as well as safe nesting sites for countless turtles.

JAMAICA
Goldeneye

The former estate of James Bond author, Ian Fleming, GoldenEye is one of Jamaica’s most luxurious and exclusive coastal resorts. A series of private villas and cottages line the coast, tucked away in tropical gardens.

Positive Impact: Goldeneye supports a range of marine conservation projects. These include establishing a fish sanctuary in partnership with local fishermen, restoring coral reefs by employing coral gardeners from the community and assisting with the safe release of endangered sea turtles.

SEYCHELLES
North Island

This scattering of luxurious villas dot a rocky island in the Seychelles. A stay here means your own private villa, including a private pool, and access to your own private beach. It has all the tranquility of being abandoned on a desert island with none of the stress.

Positive Impact: North Island is an important nesting site for both hawksbill and green turtles. The nesting beaches here are patrolled and monitored, ensuring nests remain undisturbed and providing vital data on turtle nesting habits to aid conservation.

Ocean Generation

Ocean Generation, founded by Jo Ruxton MBE, works to restore a healthy relationship between humanity and the ocean. Their ‘Ocean Intelligence’ toolset bridges the gap between people-led ocean action and institutional system change. They harness the power of science and storytelling to share information that you can trust, relevant to your daily life and can help you understand your role in safeguarding the ocean, motivating you to take action.

Mission Blue

Hope Spots are special places that are critical to the health of the ocean — Earth’s blue heart. Under Dr Sylvia Earle’s leadership, the Mission Blue team has embarked on a series of expeditions to shed light on these vital ecosystems and ignite support to safeguard them as marine protected areas. Did you know that we have our very own Hope Spot in the UK? Find out more about The Argyll Hope Spot here.
