Antarctic Peninsula & South Shetlands Cruise

16 days

from $6,845pp (excluding flights)

The perfect introduction to Antarctica with roughly five days spent exploring the Antarctic Peninsula.

  • Explore the Antarctic Peninsula -  one of the world's last pristine wilderness regions on earth
  • Travel aboard a small (max. 122) ice-strengthened vessel, renowned for excellent guiding with an emphasis on getting ashore
  • Unique wildlife opportunities - penguins, whales and seals, as well impressive birdlife as you cross The Drake Passage
  • Exciting adventure options are available on specific departures (camping, kayaking, skiing, ice climbing)

The perfect introduction to Antarctica with roughly five days spent exploring the Antarctic Peninsula and giving intrepid travellers the ultimate bragging rights of having crossed the Drake Passage. Sea time is spent spotting whales and trying to capture the perfect photographs of the numerous albatross species that follow the ship. There are a variety of informal lectures given by the expedition staff during sea time, on subjects such as polar exploration, photography, marine biology and environmental issues. Full advantage is taken of the extended daylight hours and as soon as the peninsula is within reach the ship prepares for exploration and days are spent cruising ice-clogged channels by Zodiac looking for seals, whales and interesting bergs. Landings are also a major part of the experience and for many, setting foot on the white content is the ultimate travel experience in the world.

Day 1

Fly London to Buenos Aires overnight

Day 2

Day at Leisure with Optional Sightseeing
Free day to explore Buenos Aires. Here are some of the best ways to spend your time in this vibrant city:- Learn to tango in one of the city's famous milongas (dance halls)- Linger over a martini in the opulent surroundings of the Alvear Palaces lobby bar;- Watch a game of polo involving some of the world's leading players;- Check out the trendy bar and restaurant scene in hip Palermo Viejo;- Explore the riverside suburb of Tigre and cruise the waterways of the Delta;- Experience gaucho culture and traditional rural life on a Pampas estancia;- Make a day trip by ferry across the Plata River to explore the charming UNESCO town of Colonia in Uruguay.

Known as 'The Paris of Latin America', Buenos Aires is quite simply one of the world's greatest cosmopolitan cities. World class museums and leading restaurants jostle for space with boutique shops and antique markets, and the colonial architecture and cobbled streets of San Telmo contrast with the modern lines and waterfront designs of up and coming Puerto Madero. It is a city with a colourful and fascinating history, which has given rise to a variety of neighbourhoods from the uber trendy Palermo Soho to the bohemian charm of La Boca, the birth place of tango.

Day 3

Fly Buenos Aires to Ushuaia

Situated on the southern shore of Tierra del Fuego, Ushuaia is the most southerly town in the world. Founded in 1884, the town was a penal colony until 1947. The location is fantastic, with views over the Beagle Channel and across to the Chilean Island of Navarino. Ushuaia can be either the jump off point for Antarctic cruises or the base from which to explore Tierra Del Fuego National Park and The Beagle Channel.

You will be staying at Hotel Albatros, Bed & Breakfast

Day 4

Embark
Join the boat, be on deck during the scenic Beagle Channel heading east towards the Drake Passage and Antarctica.

Day 5

Three Days Travelling to the South Shetland Islands
Wandering Albatross, Storm Petrels and other seabirds accompany the ship during the sail south across this famous passage named after Sir Francis Drake. Continue towards the Antarctic Convergence, a biological barrier where cold polar waters sink beneath the warmer waters of the more temperate zones.

Arriving in the South Shetland Islands, places such as King George and Livingston Island support huge numbers of nesting penguins, while seabirds nest on the cliffs and elephant seals wallow along the shores. Deception Island is still considered an active volcano and sailing through the narrow passage (Neptune's Bellows) into its huge flooded caldera is a thrilling experience.

Day 8

Spend the Next Four Days Exploring Antarctic Peninsula
The Antarctic Peninsula is the most easily accessible part of The White Continent, but it also has some of the most intimate and awe-inspiring scenery, as well as a rich variety of wildlife. This voyage offers ample opportunity to experience the most interesting points along the north-western part of the peninsula.

Sailing around the northern tip of the Antarctic Peninsula, navigate the Antarctic Sound, often referred to as 'iceberg alley'. Huge tabular icebergs drift north from the Antarctic continent and into the Sound. All voyages in this region are very much dependent on weather, ice conditions and the wildlife encountered. Each day several landings or cruises by zodiac are made, these voyages are about getting off the main vessel and exploring as much as possible.

The following are a few of the places which are possible to visit:

Deception Island is a sub ducted crater, which opens into the sea, creating a natural harbour for the ship. Here find hot springs, an abandoned whaling station, thousands of Cape Pigeons and many Dominican Gulls, Brown and South Polar Skuas and Antarctic Terns. Wilson's Storm Petrels and Black-bellied Storm Petrels nest in the ruins of the whaling station in Whalers Bay.

Half Moon Island, with its colony of Chinstrap Penguins, Seals also often haul out on the beach. Paulet Island, a crater island carpeted with nesting Adélie Penguins.

In Neko Harbour and Paradise Bay with its myriad icebergs and deep cut fjords, there is the opportunity to set foot on the Antarctic Continent at Almirante Brown, an Argentine research station. While zodiac cruising between the icebergs in the inner parts of the fjords, there are good chances to see Humpback Whales and Minke Whales.

At Port Lockroy, thriving colonies of penguins and shags and a former British scientific station that has recently been renovated and serves as a fascinating museum as well as the only post office in Antarctica.

The Ukrainian Vernadsky Station, receive a warm welcome from the station crew, also renowned for having the best bar in Antarctica.

Cuverville Island, is a small precipitous island, nestled between the mountains of the Antarctic Peninsula and Danco Island. It contains a large colony of nearly 5,000 pairs of Gentoo Penguins and breeding pairs of Brown Skuas.

Melchior Islands offer beautiful landscape and zodiac cruising among the icebergs, it is possible to encounter Leopard Seals, Crabeater Seals and whales.

The natural cycle of life ensures that every expedition is different. And that every expedition itinerary is full of surprises

Sue Grimwood, Travel Expert

"It was tremendously helpful to be able to speak to someone who had been to Antarctica before - Sue had been on the ship we had booked, so was able to give us some very useful information. We felt that at every stage of the booking process that we were in safe hands. "

""I was uncharacteristically worried about this trip - neurotic some might say - and I was given 110% support and help with everything. I had been disappointed by not being able to get a space on the 2014 trip and so Sue was stuck with me for 2 years - a testament to her patience and professionalism. I was confident in Sue - she knows Antarctica and speaks from experience, that is worth a huge amount. Emails, which I would send were responded to almost immediately.""
