Bear Country: Katmai & Kodiak

Why Visit

Whilst bears can be found throughout the state, Katmai & Kodiak regions offer the best opportunities for viewing brown bears in Alaska and in fact the world. Here prolific bear populations thrive and offer generous viewing experiences throughout the season. The wild and untouched nature offer sanctuary to bears and an abundance of other wildlife.

About Katmai & Kodiak

Katmai National Park and Preserve is an active volcanic region surrounding Mount Katmai and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. Katmai National Park is also an important habitat for salmon and home to the largest population of protected brown bears that come to feed.

The island of Kodiak is where the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge is found, an area of wilderness that covers two thirds of the island with rugged mountains, alpine meadows, wetlands, spruce forests and grassland. The refuge is fantastic for fishing and a reason why over 2,000 bears are found here. The best time to view the bears is between June and September, with no roads in the refuge viewing is done by air or from a remote wilderness lodge.

  • In summer, watch North America’s largest land predators gather along the rich streams to feast on the annual salmon run
  • Watch the interaction of the new born cubs with their mothers whilst they learn the lay of the land
  • Visit Brooks Falls to witness the iconic gathering of bears fishing for salmon
  • Head to the Karluk River for the world-class fishing of salmon and steelhead
  • Explore the volcanic scenery of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes left behind by the 1912 volcanic eruption

Beyond the Ordinary

For those with a passion for photography, explore this region with a professional. Not only experts in their field but people who understand the nature and dynamics of this sensitive region. Small group tours are a great way to do this and include flightseeing over mountain ranges, volcanic areas and in the heart of bear country.
