Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel

Lying on the edge of quaint Paternoster, Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel looks out towards the Atlantic, with the windswept beach beginning metres in front of its ocean-facing suites.

Formed from a cluster of whitewashed buildings, this relaxed hotel is perfectly located for exploring the west coast.

There are 13 rooms and suites, in a number of categories, split between those offering views of the beach and those looking out over the sandy shrubland behind. Whilst the ocean rooms benefit from the cooling sea breeze and stunning sunset views, the nature rooms look out onto a habitat alive with small birds and dotted with colourful flowers during springtime.

Inside, the decor is bright and simple, with high ceilings making the rooms feel spacious and airy. The suites feature decks in front, as well as comfortable lounge areas. The hotel’s open-fronted restaurant is positioned at its centre, facing the beach and with a lovely terraced area.

The beach is perfect for a sunset stroll, a long walk or a quick swim. Further down the coast, there is a nature reserve that is rich with birds that can be explored on foot or by bicycle (free to borrow from the hotel).

Why we like Strandloper Ocean Boutique Hotel

This wild, windswept location is perfect for getting out of cosmopolitan Cape Town, but it also offers a culinary experience that rivals the city. At Strandloper’s restaurant, the specialities are locally caught fish and shellfish, which almost go straight from the ocean to plate. And Paternoster itself is home to a number of other excellent restaurants – surprising for such a small place – each with its own unique twist, but all serving excellent Cape wine to accompany the food.

Abalone House is a boutique guesthouse situated in picturesque Paternoster on the west coast, set in the tranquil south side of the village with wonderful views down to a white stretch of beach and the Atlantic Ocean. The ten comfortable rooms are set around a central courtyard, with garden or sea views, most with private patio or balcony. Reuben’s, a highly acclaimed restaurant with striking sea views, is the setting for meals and ready-packed beach bags are available for lunches on the beach.

Tswalu Kalahari £££££

Tswalu Kalahari lies at the foot of the Korannaberg mountain range, facing westwards across the grasslands of the Kalahari. This 115,000-hectare private reserve has grown over the past 30 years, rewilding an area that was once farmland. Now, it is home to just two lodges, as well as a host of rare and endangered species. These include desert-adapted black rhinos, black-maned Kalahari lions, cheetahs and African wild dogs.
