Where to stay in Chile
Our team has handpicked this collection of properties to give you luxury options in styles to suit any journey.
Set on 25 acres of land that stretches inland from the coast, Refugia Chiloe can be found on the enchanting and folklore-full Chilean island of Chiloe.
Offering an immersive experience that honours local island traditions and takes advantage of its unique location and awe-inspiring scenic clifftops, the property has been built in the style of the “palafitos” traditional stilt-houses, but with a modern twist. Its 24 wood-clad rooms, decorated with handmade textiles and traditional woodcarvings, are completely exclusive in feeling and boast wonderful panoramic views from the upper floor.
Aside from the verdant pastures and dramatic coastline that form the backdrop for this spectacular piece of island architecture, Refugia Chiloe is committed to giving its guests a true insight into the folklore and mythology that the archipelago is renowned for.
Committed to protecting the bird-rich wetlands, Refugia Chiloe works closely with the Centre for Conservation and Study of Natural Heritage (CECPAN) on the preservation of biodiversity. The property has also been declared a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS) as a result of its work in the conservation of native crops and dedication to ancient agricultural practises.
Aside from biking through enchanting woodlands and hiking over clifftops, guests at Refugia Chiloe can explore the tiny forgotten islands of the archipelago onboard the hotel’s own wooden boat named Williche, peruse some of the village markets, meet with local shipbuilders, visit the UNESCO island churches, or kayak through the inland channels.
With their own stable of horses, who can often be seen grazing on the grassy pastures that encompass the property, guests are able to saddle up for horseback explorations around the seashore and over rolling hills. Within the property, unwind in the cocoon-like spa with a rejuvenating deep-tissue massage after a day of long exploration, or take a dip in the panoramic outdoor infinity pool.
As well as shiatsu, reflexology and deep-tissue massages, the spa and wellness centre has a steam room, sauna, an indoor pool and an outdoor heated infinity pool with views over the wildlife-dense Pullao wetlands. The spectacular restaurant exhibits far-reaching and wide-ranging views from its floor-to-ceiling windows and serves traditional dishes made from exceptionally fresh ingredients, as well as decadent homemade bread and pastries.
The property has been featured on Conde Nast Traveller’s Gold List, which is the editor’s curation of their favourite hotels, resorts, and cruise ships around the world.
Refugia Chiloe sits on a hilltop overlooking the other islands of the Chiloe archipelago, overlooking the Andes mountain chain in the distance.
