Converted from a coffee plantation, Kyambura Gorge Lodge has been restored into a stunning base from which to do some of the best chimpanzee trekking in Uganda due to its proximity to the Rwenzori Mountains and the Kyambura Gorge.
All eight of the guest bandas are handbuilt and beautifully decorated with artifacts inspired by local African culture. Huge, open living spaces in the main area, incorporate weathered pieces collected from around the site of the lodge in its former life as a working coffee plantation. At night, the candles add atmosphere and whilst the food is always good, the goat curry is out of this world.
Chimpanzee treks are accessible directly from the lodge via the private footpath that leads down into Kyambura Gorge.
Ever since Kyambura Gorge Lodge was built, the focus has been on preserving the at-threat gorge ecosystem, which is home to an isolated population of chimpanzees. In 2019, this work reached a significant milestone, with the creation of a three-kilometre-long buffer zone along the northern part of the gorge.
Not only was the purchase of this area of land funded by the lodge, it has also been replanted with more than 3,000 indigenous trees with the help of the local community and lodge guests. This woodland now provides a valuable buffer between Kyambura Gorge and community land.
As well as chimp trekking, boat trips and game drives, it is now also possible to track lions in Queen Elizabeth National Park – this is easily arranged through Kyamburu Gorge Lodge. These excursions are led by Dr Seifat or one of the other researchers based in the park.
Spend several hours tracking the park’s tree-climbing lions, using locator devices to find them. Gain a hands-on understanding of lion research as well as having a fantastic opportunity to encounter the park’s largest predators.

Ishasha Wilderness Camp is situated inside the Ishasha sector of Queen Elizabeth National Park on the Ntungwe River.
