Perched in Akagera National Park, you will find Karenge Bush Camp. With only six charming canvas tents, this bush camp can accommodate a maximum of 12 guests, making for an intimate, wilderness experience.
Remote, charming and scenic, Karenge Bush Camp’s early-morning access to the game-rich Kilala Plains offers excellent wildlife viewing and maximises your chance of spotting lions and hyenas. Combine with Ruzizi Lodge in the southern sector of Akagera National Park for a wonderful trip.
Karenge means ‘small footprint’ in Kinyarwanda, representing Karenge Bush Camp’s commitment to leaving nothing more than a light ecological footprint. The seasonal Karenge Bush camp is set up twice a year and removed, leaving no trace of its being behind; it is the only mobile camp in Akagera National Park.
Whether on day or night game drives, keep an eye out for eland, topis, giraffes, impalas, sable and roan antelope, zebras, crocodiles, lions, leopards, primates and close to 500 bird species. A boat trip on Lake Ihema will also provide good opportunities to view the water species.
African Parks began managing Akagera National Park in 2010 with 59 people employed. In 2021, this had increased to 288 with the vast majority of staff originating from local communities. This injection of funds into local economies via park staff salaries and the purchasing of local materials and services strengthen community ties and ensure the park’s long-term sustainability.
Karenge is in the north of the park – a four-hour drive from the south entrance and a one-hour drive from Mutumba Gate.
