Regularly rated as one of the world’s top retreats, Huka Lodge dates to the 1920s when it was originally a simple fishing lodge. Located on the shores of the Waikato River, a short distance from the cascading Huka Falls, this boutique lodge combines extremely comfortable accommodation with a gourmet dining experience and magical location.

The 19 rooms and two cottages are furnished using antiques and historical artwork and all have bifold doors framing the wonderful river views. Facilities include a choice of swimming pools, tennis courts and plenty of experiences from fishing to cycling.

Why we like Huka Lodge

The riverside location of Huka Lodge is magnificent and if budget allows, it really does make a wonderful spot from which to explore the delights of Taupo, Rotorua and Tongariro National Park. Add to this Michelin star chefs, eco-friendly initiatives and knowledgeable staff and it is easy to see why Huka Lodge is a regular recipient of international awards and accolades.

Activities

The riverside location of Huka Lodge opens up a wealth of activities from world-class trout fishing to kayaking, jet boating and white-water rafting. On land, there is horse riding, rock climbing, tennis and even skiing in the winter months.

Sustainability

Huka Lodge has always been committed to adopting sustainable practices which include reducing single-use plastics by using pioneering plant-based water bottles that can be composted as well as reusable ones. Paper straws, planting of native tree species and bee-friendly plants plus using organic and sustainable ingredients where possible are just a few of the other initiatives.

Set in 16,000 acres of wilderness, Poronui is a historic fly-fishing, hunting and wilderness retreat. Accommodation consists of seven timber guest cabins, each with large balconies overlooking the Taharua River. In addition, Blake house offers secluded and luxurious private villa accommodation for up to 16 guests or embark on a glamping experience in one of two canvas safari tents on the banks of the river.
