Comuna do Ibitipoca

Three hours’ drive from Rio lies Comuna do Ibitipoca, a 4,000-hectare private reserve that aims to preserve and reforest native plant species, and create wildlife corridors.

At the centre of the reserve is Fazenda do Engenho, a traditional farmhouse dating back to 1715. In 2006 it was lovingly restored, keeping the original colonial characteristics to create a wonderful eight-room hotel.

There is also Carlinhos House, a separate three-bedroom building which is perfect for families. The whole property has been beautifully furnished in a rustic farmhouse style; rooms are light and airy with polished wooden floors.

A really special place that few travellers have discovered. With 60 staff looking after just 11 rooms, all your wants and needs will be catered to.

Don’t let the transfer time deter you. Instead, take a short but amazing helicopter flight from Rio over iconic sites, like Sugar Loaf mountain and Christ the Redeemer statue. This is more than just a transfer – it is a memorable way to arrive.

Activities

Activities include exploring the grounds, nearby waterfalls and mountains either on foot, 4×4 or by horse. For a more relaxed option, there is daily yoga and a spa with many treatments on offer.

Sustainability

Comuna do Ibitipoca are part of an experimental socio-environmental project focused on people and their home, the planet. Around 99% of the 5,000 hectares is in the process of recovering the native flora and fauna of the Atlantic Forest and thus reversing the loss of biodiversity. Medium-sized animals are once again being seen in the region, indicating a healthy environment throughout the food chain.

Not only this, but Comuna do Ibitipoca prioritise products without packaging; all recyclable material is sent to a recycling centre and any organic residues are composted, transformed in humus and used as fertilizer.
