Built amidst a vast and spectacular wilderness, Chilko Experience Wilderness Lodge was originally created as a private family retreat to enjoy with friends and family.
The lodge still retains all the charm and welcoming atmosphere of a family estate but now welcomes guests to stay in the six log and timber frame cabins. With a boutique feel, a maximum of 12 guests are hosted at any one time and the ethos of owners Phil and Anne Huston is fun family time.
Built log by log over five years, each accommodation is set in 25 acres for complete privacy and have been lovingly furnished and decorated by Anne Huston, a keen antique collector. An all-inclusive stay here includes gourmet meals served in the main lodge, all activities and use of the gym, climbing wall and hot tub. Spend days horse-riding, kayaking, hiking and axe throwing!
Not lacking a sense of humour, the walls of the main lodge depict scenes of grizzly bears dressed in waders, fishing the waters of Chilko. Perfect for families with a host of fun activities for all ages and an ethos to ‘make better kids and better families’.
Over 100 grizzly bears frequent the Chilko Valley during September and October when sockeye salmon fill the waters of Lake Chilko and the bears congregate to feed on them. Autumn is also a spectacular time when thousands of aspen trees covering the mountainsides turn many shades of orange and red. As well as bears, there is the chance to see moose, deer, black bear and many bird species including eagles.
One of the aims of owners Phil and Anne Huston was to ensure that there were activities to suit all ages, from an eight-year-old to an 80-year-old. A stay here is all about the great outdoors and there is plenty to keep everyone occupied. Head out for the day with a sumptuous picnic lunch:
The main lodge is the heart of the resort and where all meals are served including a buffet-style breakfast, communal dining each evening and a bar area. For those who wish to relax a little, there is a hot tub overlooking the lake or a full gym and climbing wall for the fitness conscious. Over 98% of the power at the lodge is generated by their on-site solar system.
Located in the heart of the Cariboo Chilcotin Coast on a five-million-acre wilderness area in British Columbia and approximately 150 air miles north of Vancouver, Chilko Experience Wilderness Lodge can be reached via a number of routes. Take a scenic one-hour charter flight from Vancouver, Whistler or Vancouver Island or alternatively fly to Williams Lake, pick up a hire car and take a beautiful three-hour drive to the lodge.
