Murchison Falls National Park

The best place in Uganda to search for the shoebill stork.

The world-famous Murchison Falls are impressive – the Nile forces its way through a 7-metre gap in the rocks and tumbles 40 metres below, whilst in the background the pacified river winds its way towards Lake Albert.

The best way to see and feel the falls is by boat, as not only do you get to experience the full power of the Falls, but can keep an eye out for some of Africa’s largest crocodiles basking on the shores. The Park is the best place in Uganda to search for the shoebill stork.

A little more about Murchison Falls

Uganda’s largest National Park, cut in half by the Nile, offers a varied landscape from dense rainforest on the hilly ranges in the south-west to undulating savannah in the north-west.

The prime area for game viewing is the peninsula between the Victoria and the Albert Nile’s, known as the Buligi Circuit, where the concentration of animals is the highest including an increasing number of excellent lion sightings along with the famous and elusive shoebill stork. It also offers some of the best fishing in the country for those brave enough to take on the challenge.

Illona Cross

Born in a small South African town, I have always followed my passion for nature and discovery. After studying Nature Conservation in Pretoria, I was one of the first women to complete a very tough cadetship in the Natal Parks Board. It was here where I cut my teeth in African wildlife management.

Chris is the Conde Nast Traveller chosen Specialist for Africa.

25 years ago, my first trip to Africa took on a life of its own. I planned for three months, I stayed for two years. Whilst there, I was mistaken for a priest, attacked by sharks and arrested. Yet the countless, clattering journeys opened my eyes to the beauty of the landscapes and the grace of the people. My recent trips are undoubtedly more comfortable, but the welcome is as warm as ever and the best experiences are still those I never see coming.
