Bunyaruguru Crater Lake Field, Fort Portal, Uganda

Lake Mburo

This small, but often overlooked park is ideally located on the way to or from Bwindi, and a few days spent here gives you plenty of wildlife and the chance to unwind. Nubian woodpeckers and flycatchers flit across smooth lakes, as hippos and crocodiles bask in the sun. Needless to say, boat safaris play a big part here but walking safaris and horse-riding also offer alternatives to more traditional drives.

  • One of the only parks in Uganda where you can enjoy horse-back safaris
  • Perfectly positioned to unwind for a few days after trekking in Bwindi
  • A mixture of activities on foot, vehicle or kayak gets you close to the game
  • The only park in Uganda to contain an entire lake

Small but perfectly formed, the tranquil Lake Mburo National Park is situated in rolling hills surrounding forest ringed lakes and open grassy valleys. Comparisons are inevitably made with the Kenyan lakes, but Mburo has a relaxed feel all of its own with the beautiful sitatunga and eland moving gracefully through the park, and where hyena and leopard are often heard and occasionally seen.

Stay at Mihingo Lodge, one of the most stylish lodges in the region and watch the sunset from the bar set in the kopjes overlooking the park.
