Tailor-Made Holiday

Tanzania - Katavi and Mahale Safari

Safari off the beaten track

10 days

from £7,295pp (excluding flights)

This unusual safari should be on every African enthusiast's bucket-list. An unparalleled experience it combines the recently accessible far northern Serengeti with the out-of-world experience that is the Mahale National Park.

  • Experience a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to view wild chimpanzee
  • Combine the Serengeti with a Tanganyika beach
  • Experience superior service, guiding and hospitality
  • See uncharted Tanzania

Situated on the border of Kenya and Tanzania, Lamai Camp is the ultimate in bush luxury with superior guiding and hospitality set amongst ancient woodlands and waving grassland. Near to the Masai River where, in season, the migration thunders down the banks. Out of season the elephant herds come to feast on the fruits and good local wildlife relay on the permanent water source.

Set against the emerald Lake Tanganyika is the Mahale Mountain National Park. Home to one of the best habituated chimpanzee colonies, inaccessible except by Arab dhow gliding silently along the shoreline where African highland forest plunges dramatically into the deepest lake in Africa.

Greystoke Mahale camp is one-of-a-kind, accessible only by boat and nestled on a sandy beach where steep dense forest tumbles into inky water.  A place where you can imagine Livingstone and Speke sitting around a fire. The rooms are built from off casts of Arab dhows which have traversed the deepest lake in Africa, in the day you walk the mountainside seeking wild chimpanzee and at night you dance “Lord of the Flies” like around a bonfire in ancient Africa.

Day 2

Travel from Arusha to Katavi National Park (Air Transfer Journey)

One of Tanzania's more remote and least explored national parks, Katavi offers a refreshing break from the busier parks on the country's northern circuit. Renowned for its biodiversity, it is home to an array of animal and bird life.

Transfer from airport to Chada Katavi Camp.

You will be staying at Chada Katavi, All inclusive

Day 3

Days at Chada Katavi
Spend time exploring the Katavi National Park. Set out on game drives in the early morning and late afternoon, or take advantage of the daily walking safaris. Also take a night drive, in search of nocturnal species.

Dominated by floodplains, the meandering Katuma River and acacia woodlands, this beautiful ecosystem is home to healthy populations of zebras, buffaloes, wildebeests and elephants, as well as numerous predators. These include cheetahs, lions, hyenas and leopards. Wild dogs are also said to roam the park, but sightings can never be guaranteed.

The open plains and lack of vehicles also make for excellent on-foot game viewing. Accompanied by an expert guide and armed ranger, explore this rarely visited landscape. Immerse yourself in the bush, admiring the impressive array of birdlife and looking out for the big game that wanders by.

Fly camping can also be arranged, at an additional cost.

Travel from Katavi National Park to Mahale National Park (Air Transfer Journey)

Mahale National Park is famous for containing some of the last remaining wild chimpanzees in Africa. The park is dramatically located, on the eastern shore of Lake Tanganyika. With peaks rising to 2,462 metres above sea level, and the Mahale Mountains running from northwest to the southeast across the park, it is wonderfully different from the savannah landscapes that Tanzania is famous for.

Transfer to Camp

You will be staying at Greystoke Mahale, Full board and house beverages

Day 7

Days at Greystoke Mahale
Explore the dramatic Mahale National Park, spending time trekking in search of the chimps that inhabit the forest-covered mountains.

One trek is available for each full day spent at the camp, with groups limited to just six people. Whilst a maximum of an hour can be spent with the chimps, the speed they move at and the challenging nature of the terrain means trekking time varies and the treks can be strenuous.

However, this is a fantastic opportunity to get close to one of the last populations of wild chimps in Tanzania, observing their behaviour and photographing them. Also look out for other forest wildlife, such as bushbucks, bush pigs and numerous species of monkey.

Away from the forest, spend time relaxing on Greystoke Mahale's secluded beach, try fishing or perhaps take out a kayak. In the evenings, step aboard the dhow for beautiful sundowner drinks.

You will be staying at Greystoke Mahale, Full board and house beverages

Jackie Devereux, Travel Expert

"Every part of our trip was the highlight and it is not possible for us to point out just one thing, event or place."

"However, we received a magnificent surprise of a helicopter ride between camps in Botswana which meant a flight over the delta and an opportunity to see the delta and how it is formed. It was a wonderful surprise organised by Jackie and we were both absolutely overjoyed with the opportunity. I do not believe that there was more that could have been done as we had a magnificent trip."

"Jackie was excellent- she listened and was very knowledgeable."
